Battlefield May Become A TV Series, Here's What We Know
There are a ton of reboots and revivals in the works on TV right now, but one thing TV hasn't been super excited about doing is turning popular games into TV shows in recent months. However, that's exactly what Paramount Television is hoping to do with the popular Battlefield franchise. The video game is set to become a TV project. Here's what we know.
The aforementioned Paramount Television is teaming up with Anonymous Content to bring the project to television, nabbing the rights from DICE and Electronic Arts. So far the project seems pretty early in the process and we don't know how the companies plan to write a cohesive storyline for a series of games that have one over popular approval. We also don't know if this would be a live action drama or how else the series could conceivably be set up. We do know that if it moves forward, Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta will executive produce, per THR. The project is going to be pitched to a variety of networks coming up, including network, cable, streaming cable and premium cable potential options.
Various versions of Battlefield have been around since 2002, when Battlefield 1942 was first developed for Windows and OSX. By now, the series has expanded to numerous platforms and features battles occurring in different conditions and areas. More than 60 million players have been involved with Battlefield worldwide.
The Battlefield announcement comes just a short time after the Warcraft movie, also based on a popular game franchise, hit theaters. While the film did much better than expected overseas, it has been a domestic failure. It's hard to tell if a TV series based on another big franchise might be able to find its way into audience's homes and then into audience's hearts.
While we wait to see if the video adaptation ends up moving forward, there are a slew of other reboots and revivals in the works. Among these is Netflix's upcoming Gilmore Girls revival and CBS' soon-to-be series MacGyver. There are a ton of reboot, remakes, revivals and even prequels in the works or that have already moved forward on TV and you can check out some more here. In addition, while TV projects usually take quite a while to make it to the small screen, there are plenty of brand new TV programs coming to television this fall. You can check out the full list here.
In the meantime, a new Battlefield is scheduled to be released in late October. While we wait for news on the TV series, you can check out what we know about Battlefield 1 before its big release this fall.
