When Arrow Will Reveal Black Canary's Final Words
Spoilers are in this article, obviously!
Arrow made a bold move in Season 4 by killing off one of its longest-running characters in Laurel Lance, AKA the Black Canary. She was murdered by magical supervillain Damien Darhk, and it's been confirmed by folks ranging from star Stephen Amell to executive producer Marc Guggenheim that Laurel is dead and the plot is moving on. Still, her story isn't completely finished until the show shares her final words to Oliver. Now, we've learned when Arrow plans on making the big reveal, and it's coming sooner than we might have thought. The mystery of Laurel's final words will be resolved in the Season 5 premiere.
The first episode of the fifth season will end the suspense and clarify just what went on in Laurel's final moments, according to TV Guide Magazine. Arrow has been known to drag out reveals, and it's good to know that we won't be waiting until the November sweeps ratings period to find out what Laurel said to Oliver on her deathbed. Even relatively minor cliffhangers can lose their appeal if they go too long without resolution.
Arrow fans weren't too terribly shocked by Laurel's death in Season 4. The show had been teasing the death of a major character ever since the season premiere, and the evidence was mounting up that a Lance would be heading off to that great vigilante bunker in the sky. The characters weren't quite prepared for Laurel's sudden downturn, however, so we may discover that Laurel's last words weren't actually intended by Laurel to be her last words. She may have just been passing along a message that she would explain further once her stitches healed. Of course, her confession to Oliver that he was the love of her life even if she wasn't the love of his felt a heck of a lot like a deathbed statement, but maybe pain meds are to blame for that particular statement. She didn't know she was dying. The last thing she said was probably not "Farewell, cruel world! I'm going to hang out for a heavenly happily-ever-after with Tommy now!"
One theory immediately in the aftermath of her death was that she was asking Oliver to help her fake her demise, but that was debunked thanks to the deluge of behind-the-scenes denials that Laurel would ever be coming back to life. Given that Damien Darhk is dead and the forces of H.I.V.E. have been defeated, any info that she passed to Oliver might have to concern her job as an attorney if the reveal is going to be relevant to Season 5 events. Now that there's a new district attorney in Star City who looks to have a big role in Season 5, any legal details that Laurel gave to Oliver could be extremely valuable.
Only time will tell what Laurel told Oliver on her deathbed. Arrow will return to the airwaves with the big reveal on Wednesday, October 5 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Check out our breakdown of what we know so far about Arrow Season 5 for a peek ahead.
