The cast and crew of Supergirl are busy filming Season 2 in an all-new location for an all-new channel, but that doesn't mean they weren't willing to take a short break to make an appearance at Comic-Con this weekend. Surprisingly, not a whole lot of new information was revealed about the new season, or how Supergirl would connect with other CW shows like Arrow and The Flash. The show also only briefly touched on who the mysterious character in the Kryptonian pod that crash landed on Earth in the season finale is. We don't have a name for the character, but we did learn who the actor playing him will be. Chris Wood from The Vampire Diaries will be the latest alien to join Supergirl.
The reveal came from the Supergirl Comic-Con Panel, where our own Conner Schwerdtfeger was in attendance to hear the news. Those in the panel included cast members Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers/Supergirl), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), David Harewood (Hank Henshaw/J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter), Mehcad Brooks (James Olsen), Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott) and Executive Producer Sarah Schechter. The biggest reveal to come from the panel was the confirmation that Chris Wood's mysterious new character was indeed inside the pod and will be a DC comics character. Wood is mainly known for his roles on the TV shows The Vampire Diaries and _The Carrie Diaries _(he's a diary pro). Now that we know the actor inside the character inside the pod, speculating his identity just got the tiniest bit easier.
The most popular theory so far seems to be that Chris Wood will be playing some kind of Superman-esque character. One such opinion is that he will be playing Superboy. In the comics, Superboy a clone of Superman (who will also be making his debut on the show this season) and Lex Luthor. That's a pretty big departure, and the show might not be equipped to handle that particular character just yet.
Another theory that has been growing since the reveal of Wood's casting is that he will be playing a character called Mon-El. He's a Daxamite, an alien race that gains powers on Earth in the exact same way that Kryptonians do to the point where they might as well just be from the same planet. The big difference is that he's weak to lead instead of Kryptonite. Sometimes known as Valor, Mon-El wears an inverted costume copy of Superman, so right now he seems like the most likely choice for "Pod Guy."
Given that the folks at the CW weren't willing to reveal the character's name at Comic-Con, it seems unlikely we'll learn much more before the show premieres. It's highly possible that they want fans to first witness the revelation during the premiere, thus drawing any viewers who weren't already curious about the move to the CW. We'll finally know the answer to all those burning questions later this fall when Supergirl premieres on Monday, October 10 on the CW.
