A New Justice Society Of America Member Was Just Added To Legends Of Tomorrow
Season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow ended on an exciting note as the Justice Society of America came into play. The JSA has never gotten as much coverage in mainstream media as the Justice League, so it should be perfect for Legends of Tomorrow. Season 2 will feature some key comic characters that haven't already been adapted over and over again for the screen. Now, we know what one of them will look like. Commander Steel is set to turn up in Season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow, and he'll be played by Matthew MacCaull.
Legends of Tomorrow fans who also watch iZombie will find a familiar face in Matthew MacCaull. He played hitman-turned-zombie Sebastian Meyer in Season 1. MacCaull has further experience in genre series thanks to roles on Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, and Fringe. On the big screen, he turned up in Tomorrowland in 2015, and he can currently be spotted by eagle-eyed viewers in Star Trek Beyond.
Matthew MacCaull's Commander Steel - also known as Henry Heywood - is the grandfather of new Legends of Tomorrow regular Nate Heywood, according to EW. Steel will appear alongside Obsidian, Vixen, Dr. Mid-Nite, Stargirl, and Hourman as the first Legends incarnation of the Justice Society of America. Details of what role Commander Steel will play in Season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow are currently scarce.
The original Henry Heywood of comic lore was a World War II hero who was gravely injured. To save his life, a doctor performed an experimental surgery to repair and enhance his damaged body with mechanized steel. He was left with superhuman durability, strength, and speed. Henry donned a mask to use his new enhancements to fight the forces of evil in a new way. He became known as Commander Steel.
Henry's legacy as Commander Steel will have an influence on Legends of Tomorrow even when the JSA isn't necessarily in the thick of the action. His grandson Nate will be joining the crew on board the Waverider in Season 2 as a historian looking to distinguish himself outside of his grandfather's legacy. Nate is known in comics as Citizen Steel, and he'll be played by Nick Zano. Given that both Matthew MacCaul and Nick Zano were born in 1978, we can be sure that some serious time travel shenanigans will be in play when the Heywood boys interact.
Unfortunately, we still have a while to wait before we get to see Matthew MacCaull in action as Commander Steel. Legends of Tomorrow won't be back on The CW until October 13. You can check out our breakdown of what we know so far about Season 2 in the meantime, and don't forget to take a look at our fall TV premiere schedule for what you'll be able to catch on the small screen in the near future.
