Will Jessica Jones Season 2 Have Multiple Main Villains? Here's What The Showrunner Says
Netflix has entered the superhero genre in a big way thanks to an ongoing series of Marvel ventures. The second was Jessica Jones, which followed superpowered private detective Jessica Jones as she was forced to face her own trauma and battle her nemesis Kilgrave. Krysten Ritter was fantastic as Jessica, but Season 1 never would have been nearly as compelling as it was without David Tennant in the role of Kilgrave. In fact, it's hard to imagine how Season 2 could possibly top Kilgrave as the big bad guy. According to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, featuring more than one bad guy might be the solution. Rosenberg has this to say about choosing the threats for Jessica Jones Season 2:
Melissa Rosenberg hinted at the possibility of multiple villains in Jessica Jones Season 2 during a chat with EW, and it's interesting to learn that she has no intention of trying to recapture the magic - well, the evil magic - of David Tennant as Kilgrave. Comparisons between the first two big bads would be inevitable, and Tennant was so phenomenally scary as Kilgrave in Season 1 that a Season 2 solo antagonist probably couldn't measure up. A handful of antagonists could be key in keeping Jessica Jones as must-see TV. Season 1 did admittedly drag at some points; more villains to fill the episode count could mean a complete absence of filler episodes.
Of course, Jessica Jones is a comic TV show, and nobody is necessarily 100% super dead forever. Kilgrave's death in the final episode of Season 1 doesn't mean that David Tennant can never return to the series. Still, killing Kilgrave was fabulously a cathartic move for Jessica as she finally ended her tormenter once and for all. His resurrection could ruin Jessica's Season 1 triumph, and she fought hard for that triumph. Season 2 going in an entirely different direction on the bad guy front could be best for everybody.
Jessica Jones Season 2 wouldn't be the only Netflix Marvel venture with multiple villains. Although the upcoming Luke Cage and The Defenders are both set to focus on one major antagonist, Iron Fist will reportedly feature a whole bunch of bad guys. All in all, the Marvel universe on Netflix looks like it will be filled with plenty of villains in the not-too-distant future.
Unfortunately, we do not yet have a release date for Jessica Jones Season 2. We likely won't get to see her face off against her new villains for a couple of years. She will have a key role in The Defenders, however, so she won't be gone from Netflix until she gets her second season. The next Marvel installment on the streaming series will be Jessica Jones spinoff Luke Cage, which debuts on Friday, September 30 at 12:01 PT on Netflix.
