Gotham Season 3 is going to have a lot going on right off the bat - no pun intended - in the wake of the mass breakout of resurrected bad guys in the crazy Season 2 cliffhanger, and the plot doesn't look like it's going to be a jolly barrel of laughs for anybody except the current incarnation of the Joker. As it happens, however, two characters may find a love connection amidst the chaos. According to Gotham executive producer Ken Woodruff, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle have the potential to hook up in Season 3. Here's what he had to say about what could finally push them over the edge into real romance:
[They have] really strong emotions for each other.
Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle have had a clear connection since the early days of the show. They've been alternately antagonistic and affectionate as Selina flirted and fought with the young billionaire. Once Bruce was finally hit with the puberty stick, the possible romantic tension started to come from both sides. Selina kissed Bruce in Season 1, and Bruce initiated some surprisingly charming and not at all awkward moments with the future villain.
It's been pretty sweet so far as Bruce exposed her to some of what his world of riches has to offer and Selina showed him what really happens outside of Wayne Manor's stately walls. They've seen each other at their best and worst. If that's not the recipe for a completely unsustainable but adorable teen romance, I don't know what is. Given how thorough Bruce is in all other areas of his life, he's probably been secretly planning on how to go in for the landing and kiss the girl even while all the other action is going on. Something tells me he hasn't worked all the awkwardness out of his system yet.
Ken Woodruff's comment to TVGuide about the emotional growth between Bruce and Selina is proof that Gotham will continue pursuing a version of the legendary Batman/Catwoman relationship. Selina Kyle of DC Comics is probably Bruce Wayne's most important and iconic love interest over the decades. Although Gotham is not designed to exactly follow the comics, and it makes regular changes from the source material, it seems that Bruce/Selina will indeed be one of the elements that the two mediums will have in common. There was always the possibility that the producers were simply giving nods to comic fans with the mostly innocent flirtation between the young characters. Now, those nods will likely become more.
Of course, Ken Woodruff also teased to Collider that Season 3 will explore some of Bruce Wayne's infamous playboy persona for when he masters his dual life as both billionaire and vigilante. That may not bode well for a romance between young Bruce and Selina, no matter how strong their emotions for one another. Besides, Bruce has a doppelganger of himself who could very well mess with some of his relationships before he's stopped. On the whole, we shouldn't expect any less of a complicated romance between the kids than we've gotten from some of the adults.
