Gotham is going to look different in Season 3 thanks to all the new characters that will be showing up. Some have been alluded to in the past while others will be brand new. One existing character won't even resemble her past self thanks to a re-cast of the actress to age her up. The latest slated to turn up will be one that few of us would have predicted. Selina Kyle will get a major blast from the past when her mother shows up in Season 3.
Selina will reunite with her mother after many years of living separately. Gotham has portrayed Selina as an adaptable street urchin that avoids putting down any permanent roots out of a belief that settling down would never work for her. She has always been proud of her street smarts, but that pride has led her to clash at times with her billionaire pal Bruce Wayne. Selina has met friends and acquaintances over the first two seasons; a family reunion will be something entirely new for Season 3. According to TVLine, the reunion won't go as Selina expected.
We can probably guess that Selina's mom showing up won't suddenly result in Selina moving off the streets and starting a happy little family life. Selina will evidently still love her mother despite whatever circumstances separated them and turned Selina into a street kid, but it doesn't sound like her mom will have the stability to create a home for her daughter in the long run. Selina may be in for some heartbreak on the family front. Add in the fact that Bruce will begin to dabble in the infamous playboy persona from the Batman comics, and Selina's life may be rougher than ever in Season 3. Hopefully she won't feel driven to join up with a villain again as she did with Fish Mooney.
Unlike some of the other Gotham characters, Selina's mom doesn't have much in the way of a comic background. Maria Kyle has only been briefly mentioned in Catwoman comics as a woman who loved cats and ultimately killed herself when Selina was very young. It's possible that Gotham will circle back to Selina's mom's comic story and kill her off sooner rather than later. It would be a bummer for Selina, but it would allow the status quo of her as Bruce's scrappy street source to continue.
Of course, there is the chance that the reunion of Selina and her mom will go wonderfully and the duo will be happy for a time. Even Gotham has to have elements of levity to contrast some of the doom and gloom. Selina might have been expecting disappointment when she meets her mother again. We shouldn't bet on a happily-ever-after for the future Catwoman, but anything can happen.
