There's no question that Marvel Studios and Netflix are a match made in heaven. They're like chocolate and peanut butter at this point. With three excellent solo Defenders series officially released (and more on the way) the streaming platform has afforded Marvel the opportunity to delve into some truly compelling, adult-oriented territory. It all began with the first season of Daredevil in the spring of 2015, and it now seems that we will have the opportunity to buy that amazing set of 13 episodes for ourselves.
We've just learned that Marvel Television has officially announced plans for a home release of the first season of Daredevil. The Blu-ray will hit shelves next month on November 8 -- a.k.a just in time for the holiday season. As far as gifts go, it would be difficult to find a better present for the Marvel fan in your life than the first season of a groundbreaking series like Daredevil. There has been no official announcement at this point regarding whether or not the other Netflix shows will receive Blu-ray releases as well, but this is a good start. If the home release proves successful, then hope remains that Marvel will eventually expand on this idea, and release hard copies of all of the Netflix Defenders series in the near future.
Owning the first season of Daredevil is somewhat akin to owning a piece of pop culture history. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe existed for several years prior to the show's first season, the adventures of Matt Murdock really showed the bravery of the MCU as a whole. Instead of the family friendly, PG-13 material we have come to expect from other notable MCU properties, Daredevil kicked off the gritty, hard-R Defenders universe, and showed surprising levels of maturity in the process. The success of Daredevil paved the way for Jessica Jones, as well as Luke Cage, and will eventually lead to Iron Fist and The Punisher's solo series as well.
Picking up a copy of the first season of Daredevil on Blu-ray means that we can watch our favorite scenes from that iconic season whenever we feel like it. I can already tell that when I get my copy I am going to watch the awesome "hallway fight" over and over until I wear out the disc.
