Dave Chappelle Is Returning To TV Comedy In A Huge Way
Dave Chappelle recently made his return to television as the host of Saturday Night Live, and it went better than any of us could've ever hoped. Despite the fact that it's been well over a decade since the comedian last did any substantial sketch comedy, many viewers believe he absolutely nailed every single one of his SNL performances. That said, the stand-up stage is his true home as a comedian. With that in mind, it appears that the iconic funnyman has officially teamed up with Netflix in order to bring his unique style of stand-up back to the masses in dramatic fashion.
A brand new report from Deadline confirms that Dave Chappelle has officially struck a deal with Netflix to produce no less than three stand-up specials. It seems that the deal grants Netflix the rights to two previously unaired stand-up specials from the legendary comedian's personal archive, as well as one wholly original special. Although a specific release date has not officially been announced for these specials, we have learned that Netflix will release all three of them simultaneously sometime in 2017.
While it has been years since Dave Chappelle released a stand-up special, he has definitely kept his comedy muscles warmed up during the interim years. He has performed at hundreds of concerts and small venues since disappearing from the public eye, and it's obvious that his wit is as sharp as ever. Even his Saturday Night Live monologue (in the face of time constraints and network censorship rules) managed to showcase him in peak comedic form. Check out his set from the NBC series below:
Aside from Dave Chappelle, Netflix has actively sought out some impeccable stand-up comedy talent in recent years. From Nick Offerman: American Ham, to Aziz Ansari: Live At Madison Square Garden, there's already an insane catalogue of original stand-up specials available on the platform, and that library continues to grow. In fact, in addition to Dave Chappelle, Netflix also recently inked a deal with Chris Rock -- offering him $40 million for two wholly original specials. Whether or not Chappelle earned a similar payday remains to be seen, but I think he's definitely worth every penny.
CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant details related to Dave Chappelle's three upcoming Netflix specials as more information becomes available. It's been a long time since this legendary stand-up has been so prevalent on our TV screens, but his return is more than welcome. All three of Chappelle's upcoming specials will debut simultaneously on Netflix in 2017. Stay tuned for more details!
