Watch Denzel Washington Get Hilariously Dramatic Reading Greeting Cards
Some actors have a natural charisma and gravitas that simply cannot be matched, and few modern actors epitomize that idea more than Denzel Washington. Over the course of his lengthy career, the legendary actor has given countless performances, and he has never failed to deliver the drama. Even when he finds himself dropped into the middle of a decidedly mediocre movie (looking at you, 2 Guns) we can always count on him to bring his A game every single step of the way. In fact, Washington even took to The Tonight Show stage and proved that he can turn a greeting card into total work of art. Check out the video below to see for yourself.
Denzel Washington made an appearance on last night's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the late night host eventually invited him to perform a dramatic reading of Hallmark greeting cards. The lights dimmed and a hush fell over the crowd, as each of them took turns reading the delightfully corny writing. While Jimmy Fallon characteristically struggled to stifle his laughter as he read through each card, Washington delivered what could only be described as an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winning performance with every line delivery. They obviously saved the best card for last, and Washington gave a saccharin and tearful performance -- punctuated by the single utterance of the word, "bitch." Seriously, King Kong ain't got shit on him.
Of course, it's obviously worth noting that Denzel Washington's flair for the theatrical shouldn't really come as a surprise to anybody. The man has proven time and time again that he's one of the most gifted and talented thespians of our time (or any time, for that matter) and he only continues to improve as he gets older and more experienced. In fact, many who have already seen his upcoming film Fences have hailed his performance in the play adaptation as some of his finest work to date. His role in the upcoming film recently garnered him a Golden Globe nomination, and it seems highly likely that he will be able to parlay that into an Oscar nomination (and possible win) when the Academy Awards rolls around next year. Between that and the greeting cards, the guy clearly has range.
To put it bluntly: if you consider yourself a fan of Denzel Washington's work in any capacity, it's well worth your time to check out the video at the top of this article. It provides a humorous look into the method of a modern icon, and reaffirms why we love him so much. With that in mind, make sure to check him out when Fences debuts later this month on Christmas Day!
