What Really Happened To Mariah Carey On New Year's Eve, According To Her Rep
Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve performance did not go as planned. In fact, it was a hot mess. Exactly whose fault it was, however, is still very much an ongoing discussion. The singer seemed to suggest during her performance through audible comments to the sound booth that she was having trouble hearing, but the producer of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve later released a statement claiming every piece of sound equipment worked properly. Not surprisingly, Mariah Carey's own representative wasn't too pleased about that. She fired off her own statement today, and it's pretty confrontational.
Here's the portion of the actual quote her rep gave to Billboard...
So, what the hell actually happened? It's hard to say. Clearly, Mariah Carey was flustered by something. She's performed thousands of times in her life. She should be used to run of the mill issues. This was different. She was very uncomfortable.
On the other hand, however, it seems weird Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve would throw a performer under the bus if they screwed up. In addition, every single other performance went off without a hitch. Mariah Carey has also had a few other high profile strange incidents on live television too, including that time she took off her shirt on Total Request Live.
You can check out the strange New Year's Eve performance in question below. It starts to get weird at about 1:10...
Regardless of what happened, it's impossible to say Mariah Carey hasn't taken the whole thing like a champion. She fired off an A+ tweet about making more headlines in 2017, and there's approximately a 0.0% chance she stops appearing on stage because of this. Being famous is what Mariah Carey does. She doesn't have it in her to be normal. It's the reason she rented out Disneyland for her wedding, swears by ridiculous diets and why she'll go on performing forever.
Here's to hoping we all end 2017 watching Mariah Carey bust out some of her classics on stage again. It only seems fitting, and whether it goes well or not, it'll be a spectacle, just like everything else the talented singer and over the top personality does.
