Could Season 2 Of The OA Happen? Here's What The Creators Say
Netflix has experienced a seemingly unstoppable hot streak over the last few years in the realm of original content, and one of its latest new projects taking the world by polarizing storm is the dark science fiction series The OA, which dropped almost completely by surprise last month. Considering the amount of fanfare the first season of the show ended with, many people have started to clamor for more stories in this particular universe. Now it seems that the creative forces behind the series definitely have a big picture narrative in mind. Zal Batmanglij, one of the creators of The OA, explained:
If Zal Batmanglij words to Esquire are any indication, then we can likely expect plenty more stories set within the world of The OA in the foreseeable future. Batmanglij and Brit Marling (who also headlines the series as the mysterious Prairie) designed the show with an enormous sense of mythology in mind to justify some of the wilder elements, and this has allowed them to work through their established lore in order to figure out avenues for future seasons. Perhaps optimistically, the duo have already started to work through the "mathematics" of another season, with subsequent stories telling similar self-contained tales that serve a greater overarching narrative for the series as a whole. To make a long story short: both of the show's creators are in agreement that the series could and should return.
The OA is one of those stories that actually sounds perfect for Netflix. The series centers on a blind woman who returns home with restored eyesight seven years after disappearing as a young girl. As she refuses to tell her family and new group of "friends" where she has been and what she has been up to, locals in her town start investigation in order to figure out what exactly is going on. It's a fantastically grim sci-fi fantasy mystery that looks absolutely gorgeous, and The OA has subsequently gone on to be considered one of Netflix's best recent original series, although its finale completely split audiences, even those who enjoyed the rest. Considering all of that enthusiasm, though, to not follow up on this season would be an enormous waste of potential.
