Why Kevin Smith Can't Stop, Won't Stop Directing Episodes Of Superhero Shows
Kevin Smith has established himself as an expert in all things comic-related, even hosting a show called Comic Book Men and a podcast called Fatman on Batman. He brought his superhero expertise to the small screen when he directed two episodes of The Flash on The CW, also signing on to direct the Season 2 midseason premiere of Supergirl. Smith is now officially slated to return for a second episode of Supergirl Season 2, and he explained why he keeps coming back to The CW's DC universe, saying this:
Kevin Smith was handed the reins to two very big episodes of The Flash in 2016. His first installment gave viewers their first close look at the Speed Force that grants speedsters their powers, and his second explored the nature of Earth-1 Caitlin Snow as Killer Frost. His first episode of Supergirl hasn't aired yet, but it looks like it should be pretty big as the debut episode of 2017. Smith clearly has the trust of the folks behind the scenes at The CW's DC universe, and his reveal to ComicBook.com proves that he is deeply invested in helping these particular shows stay special. Who knows? Maybe he can helm an episode of Arrow or Legends of Tomorrow next.
Few details are available about Kevin Smith's second episode of Supergirl. It will reportedly be the 17th episode, which does not yet seem to have a name. He evidently landed the gig way back in October when he was directing the midseason premiere, too. The Supergirl team felt that he was enough of a fit for the show that they began trying to coordinate with his schedule right then and there. Filming for Episode 17 will commence in late January.
The Supergirl midseason premiere was already a special episode for Kevin Smith, even before he found out that he'd be welcome back for another round of directing. Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Smith that the name of the midseason premiere would be "Supergirl Lives" in a nod to the famously unproduced script that Smith wrote back in 1996 for the much-hindered project Superman Lives. "Supergirl Lives" isn't exactly what Smith had in mind when he penned the script for the Man of Steel, but he has been open about how touched he was by Kreisberg's gesture. And I doubt anyone asked Smith to put a giant spider at the end, either.
Tune in to The CW on Monday, January 23 at 8 p.m. ET to catch Kevin Smith's very first episode of Supergirl, and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest in superhero TV news.
