Star Trek: Discovery Just Nailed The Casting For Its Captain
A Star Trek series is completely defined by its Captain. From a loveable rogue in the form of James T. Kirk to a sage-like statesman such as Jean-Luc Picard, every Star Trek series has built itself on the leadership style of its distinctive Captain. Star Trek: Discovery will be no different, and new details related to the upcoming CBS All Access prequel series have started to roll in. Star Trek fans can rejoice now that the project has found a perfect Captain in the form of Harry Potter vet Jason Isaacs.
Jason Isaacs has officially signed on to the cast of Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca of the titular starship, according to THR. Although few specific details regarding the exact characterization of Captain Lorca have been revealed at this time, the overall mission of his ship will remain the same as the U.S.S Enterprise from other iterations of the Star Trek series: to travel to uncharted territories of the universe to seek out new societies and life forms. Isaacs joins a diverse cast that already includes The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green, Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, and Michelle Yeoh, among others.
To say that Jason Isaacs has had an eclectic career would be a massive understatement. With notable roles in classic movies and TV series such as Black Hawk Down, The Patriot, Brotherhood and Event Horizon -let's hope things work out better for this space crew than that one - the actor has delved into a wide variety of characters and genres over his decades on screen. He doesn't fit into a particular mold, and that's what makes this casting decision so intriguing, though he was perhaps coincidentally only recently a part of another streaming sci-fi series: Netflix's The OA.
It's also worth mentioning the fact that Jason Isaacs is no stranger to taking part in beloved universes with rabid fan bases. Between his work as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, as well as his voice work in the Star Wars and DC Universe, (to name just a couple) he has worked extensively on iconic franchises and legendary series. That experience will undoubtedly serve him well when he steps in as the new Star Trek Captain. After all, this franchise practically invented the concept of rabid fandom.
Of course, following the official announcement of his involvement on Star Trek: Discovery, Jason Isaacs took to social media to express his excitement for the project and get fans pumped. Here's what he had to say on Twitter.
You have to admit, that's the type of photo that will get any self-respecting Trekkie excited -- even with the overabundance of J.J. Abrams-esque lens flare. We're sure the chair is comfortable, Mr. Isaacs, and we have a feeling that you're going to absolutely kill it as the new Star Trek Captain.
As always, CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to Star Trek: Discovery as new details become available to us. The series is currently set to premiere sometime in late summer/early fall. As for the remaining spring 2017 TV debuts, make sure to check out our midseason premiere guide.
