Did Legends Of Tomorrow Just Hint At A Major Character’s Death In Season 2?
Warning: MAJOR spoilers ahead for Legends of Tomorrow. Don't read any further if you have not seen "Land of the Lost" yet.
I think it is safe to say that we just saw one of the most Legends of Tomorrow episodes of Legends of Tomorrow in recent memory. It had absolutely everything, from dinosaurs to evil doppelgangers, and even a bit of human-robot romance. However, it also included quite a bit of dramatic intrigue. In fact, one of the most seemingly insignificant moments of the episode may soon spell doom for one of The Legends, as an offhand comment made by Mick Rory seems to telegraph a major Season 2 death.
Some pretty major events occurred during this evening's episode of Legends of Tomorrow that we pretty much expected to see. Rip Hunter found himself reprogrammed back to his old self, and we finally learned where the final piece of the Spear of Destiny is hiding. For those of you who missed it: Commander Steel is currently (and unsuccessfully) hiding out from the Legion of Doom as one of the Apollo 13 astronauts in 1970. However, it's a comment made by Mick Rory to Professor Stein that has us genuinely concerned about the future of this roster. Specifically, Rory explains to Stein that Jax will eventually need to get used to operating without Stein's constant advice because one day Stein will be dead and unable to hold his hand through life.
Pretty sage wisdom for a guy who likes to play with fire. Although it's a seemingly minor exchange in such an action packed episode, I think it might have some very profound implications in the coming weeks. Mentioning a possible team death is tantamount to showing a gun early in a story; eventually, it's going to go off. The fact that Rory suggested the distinct possibility of Stein dying means that nobody is safe anymore because our heroes (and by extension, the audience) have received a reminder of their own mortality.
What makes this death seem even more possible is the fact that we're closing in on the anniversary of last year's major Legends of Tomorrow death. As many of you likely remember, Captain Cold sacrificed himself at the Vanishing Point in Episode 15 of Season 1. For those of you keeping track, next week will see Episode 14 of Season 2 air. If Legends of Tomorrow follows a pattern similar to what we have already seen before with Leonard Snart, then it's entirely plausible that the series could kill off one of its central heroes in the very near future.
Does this mean that we think Stein will be dead within the next few episodes? Not necessarily, but it's possible. With Rip Hunter back onboard The Waverider as its Captain, the series' roster has completely reassembled, and it's beginning to feel a bit crowded. Legends of Tomorrow has long touted itself as a series where anything can happen at any time -- including character deaths. Maybe I'm just cynical, but the fact that everything just worked out so well for our team doesn't bode well for the future of at least one of these characters. It might be time to start a dead pool, so start placing bets.
What do you think? Do you think Mick's comments to Professor Stein telegraphed a grim fate for one of our heroes, or do you think that it's just another example of his decidedly macabre sense of humor? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below to keep this conversation going!
