There's a very solid chance that the best science-fiction show on television right now is one that you've never watched. The Expanse, currently airing its second season on Syfy, is as critically acclaimed as it gets, with everything from the characters to the scope to the production value getting praised. Somehow, though, it doesn't feel like there are nearly enough people talking about the show, but now stragglers have at least one more year to catch on. The Expanse has been renewed for Season 3 on Syfy.
For its already anticipated third outing, Syfy announced that its science fiction space opera series have 13 episodes and is set to premiere in 2018. That will give plenty of future fans an opportunity to catch up as The Expanse is currently airing its own 13-episode second season each week. Season 1 was only ten episodes long, so it's clear that the network has the confidence in the storytelling to make it as lengthy as cable series usually get.
The Expanse's renewal news should make plenty of fans happy. It's never fun to be a fan of an underappreciated show, which only adds to the paranoia that it'll get canceled before its plot is resolved. Especially since the source material still has so much story to offer the small screen adaptation. Luckily, Syfy seems to be very happy with the space-faring series' ratings, which are consistent if not outstanding, and Expanse is easily one of the network's best-critiqued series. Syfy has been slowly building an impressive line-up of several under-seen gems, such as The Magicians, Wynonna Earp, and 12 Monkeys, which got its own renewal recently...though that one came with a cancellation attached.
Based on a series of novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (writing under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey), The Expanse takes place 200 years in a future where humanity has colonized the entire solar system. War constantly threatens the peace between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, and two former strangers find themselves unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. The series stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and Frankie Adams. Academy Award-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) serve as executive producers and showrunners, alongside Naren Shankar (CSI, Farscape).
To give an idea of what the show is like to newbie's, here's one of the trailers for Season 2. Take notice of some pretty impressive visuals by cable standards.
The Expanse Season 3 will air in 2018, so keep checking back in with CinemaBlend for any and all future updates. In the meantime, watch Season 2 on Wednesday nights on Syfy at 10:00 p.m. ET.
