The Big Scene That Mandy Moore Really Wants In This Is Us Season 2
NBC's runaway hit family drama This Is Us covered a lot of ground in Season 1. Relationships of all kinds were built up, broken down, renewed and ended. The Pearsons and the people who love them laughed, yelled, complained and cried. Even with all that (and much more), there's a scene that star Mandy Moore would like to see included in Season 2 of the show, and now we know what it is. Apparently, the woman who brings Rebecca Pearson to life would really like to sing on screen with her adult daughter Kate, who's played by Chrissy Metz. Here's what Moore had to say:
Ah, well, this would be something to see. Especially since This Is Us has made a good point at showing us that Kate and her mom Rebecca don't really get along in the present day, and that seems to be something that's a pretty long-standing aspect of their relationship. Even when we see Kate as a child, most of the meaningful, parent/kid moments on the show happen between her and her dad, Jack. We learned relatively early on in the series that Kate grew up comparing herself to her mother, and that she ended up taking the resulting feelings of inadequacy out on Rebecca, which led to them not being close. So, in Season 2, if we were to see Kate and Rebecca perform a rad "karaoke duet" it would probably mean that a major cloud had lifted from their mother/daughter non-bond.
Mandy Moore is certainly right, in her words to TVLine, that singing is something that Kate and Rebecca have in common which might become an eventual source of connection for the two women. At the end of the Season 1 finale, Kate revealed to her fiancé Tobey that she's interested in beginning a career as a singer. This is something her mom pursued before giving it up to focus on her family, and again when Kate, Kevin and Randall were teenagers. That latter stint singing with a band fronted by a long-ago former boyfriend ended up causing a lot of problems for the family. But we don't know right now if Kate is aware of the singing-related fight that caused her parents to split up when she was a teen.
Ideally, though, Mandy Moore is correct in thinking that, if anything, singing could be a good way for Kate and Rebecca to connect in the present day. Now, we'll just have to wait until next season to see if this miraculous bit of bonding comes to pass. Until then, be sure to check out our midseason premiere schedule and summer premiere schedule to see what you can watch until Season 2 of This Is Us finally airs on NBC.
