Star Trek: Discovery Adds Battlestar Galactica Star And More
Star Trek: Discovery just added a lot of new cast members with past roles in science fiction shows and even someone from Battlestar Galactica. That's right, BSG fans might have figured from the picture above, Rekha Sharma will be joining the already phenomenal cast in this branch of the Star Trek universe, and we've got details about who she and all the other new additions will be playing.
Sci-fi vet Rekha Sharma is heading to CBS All Access as Commander Landry, the security officer of the Starship Discovery, which was the same position held by Natasha Yar in Star Trek: The Next Generation, albeit on a different vessel. Besides Sharma's role as Tory Foster on Battlestar Galactica, you may have also recently seen her on Season 2 of The 100 as Dr. Lorelei Tsing. And while this is her first official Trek role, Sharma also appeared in the fan-produced and unofficial web series Star Trek Continues as Avi Samara.
Next up on the Star Trek: Discovery casting is Penny Dreadful vet Shazad Latif in the role of Lieutenant Tyler, an officer of the Starfleet federation. Latif was initially announced to join the cast as Kol, but his role has since been switched. Latif has had a long career in acting in international projects, but most audiences stateside will know him as Dr. Henry Jekyll from the gothic horror Showtime series mentioned above.
Kenneth Mitchell will be the new actor play Kol, who is a commanding officer in the Klingon empire, which would appear to mean he would not be an official part of Discovery's populace. That makes sense, as Star Trek: Discovery takes place long before Star Trek: The Next Generation, and all fans know Worf was the first Klingon to graduate from Starfleet. Mitchell is well known to genre TV fans as Eric Green from the cancelled-too-soon Jericho, and he was also Ralph Cox in the hockey film Miracle.
Joining Kenneth Mitchell in the Klingon fold is musician Clare McConnell. Relatively new to the world of acting, McConnell will play Klingon leader Dennas, Feature audiences can see her when she appears in the indie film called Dim the Fluorescents, which will release later this fall.
Last but not least is one more Klingon,as Damon Runyan joins Star Trek: Discovery as Ujilli. Both the aforementioned Dennas and Ujilli are described as leaders in the Klingon race, but it's unknown whether or not they are allies or perhaps heads of different Klingon factions. Runyan has appeared in Gangland Undercover, Supernatural, Cheaper By The Dozen 2, and The Newsroom, just to name a few projects.
That's a lot of Klingons for Star Trek: Discovery, and I'm curious what their abundance means for role the race will plays when the series premieres on CBS All Access sometime between late summer and early fall. Once an official non-delayed date is announced, we'll be sure to update our summer premiere schedule. If you haven't had a chance to see our list of renewals and cancellations, be sure to check it out to see the fate of your favorite shows for next year. If you're looking to see Rekha Sharma as a member of Starfleet prior to the series, check out the Star Trek Continues episode on the next page!
