Marvel's Runaways TV Series Shows Off Its Superheroes In First Look
Superheroes are all the rage nowadays, and they've taken both the big screen and network TV by storm. Now, Hulu is getting into the superhero game in a big way with the upcoming series Runaways. The Marvel Comics-based project was ordered to series earlier this week, and Hulu has just released a first look at the crew of kids who will join together to stand up against evil. Check it out!
We've known for a while who will be playing most of the key roles in Runaways, so it's pretty great to finally see them all together and in costume for the series. The whole crew of kids is present, starting at the far left with Ariela Barer as Gert, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, Rhenzy Feliz as leader Alex Wilder, Gregg Sulkin as jock Chase Stein, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez on the far right, sadly without one of the hats she is known for in the comics. All things considered, I'd say that the three on the left have mastered the tough superhero look a little more than the three on the right, but there's still plenty of time.
One important creature that is missing from the Runaways first look (as posted on the official Twitter page) is Gert's dinosaur, known in Marvel lore as Old Lace. In the comics, Old Lace was considered a velociraptor before being correctly identified as a Deinonychus, and I know I was looking forward to see if and how Old Lace would be involved in the Hulu series. Her absence from the first look is disappointing, as it is pretty much a fact that dinosaurs make everything better, but the tweet's mention of a velociraptor emoji indicates that Old Lace will be a part of the show, even if she wasn't featured in the photo. All things considered, I can see why Old Lace would be omitted. The dinosaur would probably pull focus from the actual stars of the show.
Of course, Old Lace isn't the only Runaways character not to appear in the first look. The photo also left out the adult generation, which is comprised of the Runaways' parents, who also happen to have a variety of unusual powers and a willingness to cross lines if it means getting what they want. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to see James Marsters and the other actors who will play the adults in costume.
Hulu hasn't given an exact date of release for Runaways, but we do know that it is intended to debut by winter, which could mean any time between the end of December and the end of March. If Runaways follows the patterns of other Hulu originals, we can bet that the first season will run from 8-13 episodes. See our breakdown of what we know about the Runaways from the comics for some background on the believed characters.
