One Supernatural Star Definitely Won't Be Back For Season 13
Supernatural is known for bringing back characters that have been killed off, even if they've been killed graphically, heartbreakingly, and/or seemingly definitively. The Season 12 finale seemed to kill off two huge characters, and there was no sign of resurrection as of the very end. While the fate of Castiel isn't entirely settled just yet, we now know that Crowley will indeed be absent from Supernatural when it returns for Season 13. Actor Mark Sheppard broke the news himself via social media:
Mark Sheppard's Instagram post will undoubtedly come as bad news for any Supernatural fans who were hoping that Crowley's apparent demise in the Season 12 finale was yet another fake out, but at least we won't have to spend the rest of hiatus wondering. Waiting for spoilers and the Season 13 premiere to discover if Crowley would score yet another save from death could have been painful; a message of gratitude from the actor less than a week after the Season 12 finale means that we don't have to build up our hopes.
Crowley got a pretty good death, all things considered. Unlike many other characters who have died on Supernatural, he got to choose the time and manner of his own passing. He took his own life as part of a spell that would seal the tear between our reality and the wasteland reality that was opened by the soon-to-be-born nephilim. The spell did ultimately work (although not before poor Cas took an angel blade to the back), trapping Lucifer and the unfortunate Mary in the wasteland reality, away from Sam and Dean and the newborn nephilim. Crowley gave his life for a worthy cause, even if not everything went exactly according to plan.
All of this said, who knows? Maybe Crowley could still return in some capacity every once in a while. Supernatural has found ways to re-introduce characters for random episodes via flashbacks or trips to other times or hallucinations. The Season 12 finale might not be the very last time we see Mark Sheppard in action as Crowley. We can only wait and see at this point. Season 13 does sound like it will be going in some brand new directions, so we really may not even be able to make any accurate guesses.
Supernatural will return to The CW for Season 13 in the fall, without Crowley and perhaps without Castiel as we knew him.
