24: Legacy Cancelled By Fox, But It's Not All Bad News
Reboots and revivals are all the rage nowadays, and Fox got in the game in a bold way with a new version of 24. Starring Corey Hawkins rather than Kiefer Sutherland, it ran for for 12 episodes rather than the typical 24. While the ratings weren't great, they also weren't terrible, and it was hard to guess whether or not Fox would order a second season. Well, now we know for sure: Fox has cancelled 24: Legacy after one season. Fortunately, there is at least some good news. Legacy may be dead, but the 24 franchise is not.
Fox is working with 24: Legacy executive producers Howard Gordon and Brian Grazer to explore more series in the 24 franchise. Deadline reports that they are considering going the anthology route moving forward. The news follows on Fox executive's statements during upfronts that they were planning on meeting with Gordon about the future of 24. It's possible that we'll get new versions of 24 with new plots, new characters, and new chase sequences in the not-too-distant future.
Of course, the promise of more 24 series in the future may not soothe the sting of Legacy's cancellation, not least because the announcement of its future was pushed back for as long as it was and gave us time to hope. The season finale aired back in the middle of April, and Fox declined to make a decision about renewal or cancellation by the time of upfronts due to the fact that Corey Hawkins' schedule has him busy on Broadway in the fall premiere season. Showrunner Manny Coto seemed optimistic about Fox giving Legacy a second chance after the finale first aired, but we now know that Legacy is one-and-done.
The cancellation of 24: Legacy doesn't necessarily mean that we'll never see any of the characters ever again. Even if Corey Hawkins doesn't return as leading man, Eric and the other surviving characters could play supporting roles in future anthology seasons. We can start crossing our fingers again the the franchise finds a way to bring back Kiefer Sutherland, although he's plenty busy over on ABC with Designated Survivor, which was renewed for Season 2 despite behind-the-scenes shakeups. We'll have to wait and see what happens next.
It's possible that 24: Legacy's cancellation will mean big things for another high-profile drama. Maybe now Corey Hawkins will be able to return to The Walking Dead. He's already plenty busy with other projects, but it's not like The Walking Dead is likely to be cancelled any time soon. Maybe we'll get back Heath on The Walking Dead and more of the 24 franchise.
