Game Of Thrones Fans Think They've Spotted A Lady Stoneheart Appearance, But Can It Be Real?
Warning! This post contains spoilers from the latest episode of Game Of Thrones. Read at your own risk!
The latest episode of Game Of Thrones truly is the gift that keeps on giving. Fans that may be worried about Drogon and Jaime need to leave all that behind, as there might have been an actual Lady Stoneheart appearance in the latest episode! The questionable moment came in the midst of Arya's talk with Brienne, an already exciting scene, and it was specifically when Arya spoke the word "Mother" that someone passed by in the background, and some fans think it was a resurrected Catelyn Stark roaming the halls of Winterfell. Check it out.
Not the best glimpse of a potential Lady Stoneheart that Game of Thrones fans could've had, obviously, but the resemblance can certainly be seen. While the long green dress and the auburn hair could technically be worn by anyone in the Kingdoms, in Winterfell that's a style that Reddit agrees just screams Catelyn Stark. And the look itself is tied to the seemingly specific timing, since that mysterious citizen sweeps through right as Arya is reminding Brienne of the vow she made to Catelyn to protect Arya and Sansa. It all seems too perfect to be a coincidence, but what exactly does this moment mean?
The answer Game Of Thrones fans hope for, but know is almost 100% not true, is that Lady Stoneheart is about to make an appearance. Those unfamiliar with the character presumably haven't read the novels in which Catelyn is resurrected by Beric Dondarrion following the Red Wedding, and as "Lady Stoneheart," she begins executing known Lannisters and their collaborators. Considering the show has progressed well beyond the point of telling that particular story, and others involved with the show have acknowledged that storyline wasn't in the works in the past, it seems unlikely this is a tease to Stoneheart reuniting with Brienne, which didn't go so well in the books.
In the books, Lady Stoneheart meets back up with Brienne and discovers that she's been collaborating with Jaime Lannister. Stoneheart calls Brienne a traitor, threatening her with a hanging if she does not kill Jaime. Brienne, refusing to choose, is about to be hanged with Podrick and another character when she shouts a word that leaves her book fate a bit of a cliffhanger.
With Lady Stoneheart absent from the show, Brienne hasn't yet had to decisively choose between Jaime or the Starks, so perhaps this "ghost" moment was a symbol of her fulfilling her oath to Catelyn? Perhaps now Brienne can travel back to Jaime or wherever with a clear conscience and live the happy life we so desperately want at least one character to have in this series. That sounds plausible, but it's also possible and likely this whole scene may have just featured an extra that has absolutely nothing to do with anything and the Game Of Thrones showrunners are laughing their asses off at how much fans analyze the show.
The speculation will continue, as Game Of Thrones is all new on HBO on Sunday, August 13th, at 9 p.m. ET.
