Why Game Of Thrones Fans Are Pissed At Sam After The Finale
Warning! The following contains spoilers for the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones. Read at your own risk!
The exchange between Bran Stark and Samwell Tarly in the Season 7 finale ended up confirming what was arguably the biggest theory of Game of Thrones to date, and some people are upset about it. Granted, they're fine with the confirmation itself, but more than a little pissed with Sam for not giving credit where credit is thought to be due. Here's what's going on, and how #JusticeForGilly might become a trendy thing to tweet while GoT fans wait for Season 8.
Going back to the scene in question, Game of Thrones fans will remember that while Bran was the one to reveal Jon is the child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, Samwell added the additional bit about how he'd transcribed the info from the High Septon's diary. That's all well and good, except...as we all remember from the last time this information was teased, Gilly was the one reading this to a very pissed-off Sam, who legit brushed her off! Needless to say, Twitter took notice and began to cause a ruckus:
While there's no denying that Gilly was the one to deliver the line in front of the audience, there is a bit of contention amongst Game of Thrones fans as to whether Samwell Tarly already knew that information. Some have made the claim that the High Septon's diary Gilly was reading from had already been transcribed by Sam, or that he may have done the transcription later on. If this is true, then it wasn't necessarily incorrect of him to say he transcribed it, as opposed to translated it, although he could've given Gilly credit for the assist in repeating it so that he remembered the fact.
That portentous Game of Thrones moment is picking up enough fan-fueled steam that one has to wonder if the writing staff will take notice and make mention of it at some point in Season 8. They snuck in a cheeky reference via Davos in reference to Gendry's return this season, so it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that ta future episode could call Sam out for not acknowledging Gilly in his conversation with Bran. If that does happen, let's hope it goes down in a way similar to this:
Fans have a while to wait until Season 8 of Game of Thrones actually airs, in order to see if Gilly gets credit for her discovery, but that's fine, since there's still plenty to discuss regarding the show right now. Check out what Bran actor Issac Hempstead Wright had to say regarding rumors he could be the Night King, or for more Samwell Tarly stuff, check out how John Bradley thought his character could die, even though that scenario doesn't seem likely anymore.
