Grey's Anatomy's Two Hour Premiere Had Hookups, Reunions, And Bad News For One Surgeon
Spoilers ahead for the two hour premier of Grey's Anatomy.
It was a great night of television this Thursday, as quite a few exciting fall premiers occurred. ABC was no exception, as Shonda Rhimes' TGIT returned with a two-hour Grey's Anatomy, as well as the Season 4 premiere of How to Get Away With Murder. The former was a doozy, as Grey's Anatomy is clearly pulling no punches in its whopping 14th season. The episode featured a reunion, two new hookups, and the news that one of the surgeons has a major brain tumor. So let's break it all down.
Hardcore Grey's Anatomy fans will be pleased to see that the two-hour premiere brought the return of Kim Ravers' Teddy Altman. Teddy left the series shortly after her husband died in Season 8, and we haven't seen her since. She returned to Seattle to be with the Hunt family when Megan was admitted, although her sparks with Owen could be seen almost immediately. The two got gradually closer during the premiere, and she criticized Amelia for not being supportive enough of her husband. Owen ended up kissing Teddy toward the end of the premiere, and she told him he had to break up with Amelia before anything could happen between them. So the will they/won't they relationship that Teddy and Owen shared during her tenure on the series is back. Surprise.
If there's one thing Grey's Anatomy is known for, it's steamy hookups. We got to see two of them in the premiere, although they both had some issues. Arizona brought a new girl home, who ended up being DeLuca's Italian sister. And Jo brought home one of Webber's new temp interns, in her attempt to forget about Alex. You can imagine how great that went, as they did the deed in his parent's house.
But both of these hookups brought together exciting plot lines. Because Jo's hook up ended up opening up a dialogue between she and Ben Warren, and then he broke down the truth to Alex. And the episode ended with Jo and Alex FINALLY kissing, and presumably getting back together.
Plus, It looks like Arizona has gotten her groove back, and Carina DeLuca is going to be using the hospital to test the female brain's reaction to orgasm (yes, she's a doctor too). And it was this experiment that brought on the biggest WTF moment from the episode. Because when Amelia volunteers to have her brain tested, they discover a massive tumor on her brain. That's right, Amelia is the latest Grey's surgeon to have a life threatening illness.
Overall, the two-hour premiere episode was a very strong start to the season. There are some great storylines being played with, and Amelia's diagnosis will no doubt shape the first half of Season 14. Meredith and Rigg's story will also continue, after his proposal was rejected by Megan Hunt.
