Keeping a long running TV show is tricky. Unless you're behemoths like Grey's Anatomy or The Walking Dead, viewership and overall quality can begin declining as the seasons go on. This seems to be the case with FOX's quirky sitcom New Girl, which was massively successful in early seasons but had a rough go last year. With Zooey Deschanel on maternity leave, the show struggled to survive without its title character, and ratings hit new lows. Luckily, they were granted a final seventh season to complete the show's narrative, which will include a time jump. The finale saw Cece and Schmidt realize they're having a baby, and now we have a look at their kid for the first time, check it out.
It looks like Cece and Schmidt had a baby Ruth of their very own. I guess they had the courage to do what Ross and Rachel from Friends were unable to do, and go with a candy inspired name.
Baby Ruth (lol) will make her debut in New Girls' Season 7 premiere episode. Season 7 is set four years after the events of the finale, so we should expect some major changes for the residents of The Loft. For Cece and Schmidt, this relates to their child, who is three years old at the point where we meet her this upcoming season. Adjusting to parenthood (and therefore actual adulthood) will no doubt be a hilarious struggle for the beloved couple. In particular, it wouldn't surprise me if Schmidt had a hard time dealing with his OCD and control issues. Because we all know how much toddlers don't tend to listen to rules.
Actor Max Greenfield actually addressed this in a recent conversation with TV Line. In typical Schmidt fashion, we should expect to see him continue to be a pain in the ass when it comes to having control. And this time, it'll be about making sure Ruth has everything perfect-- a task that is all but impossible in most cases. He said this,
He really enjoys being a dad. He's also a control freak and he wants to control the environment --- because the environment's gotta be right. He's sort of like, 'I think it'd just be better if I was here.'
This sounds like a great way to keep Schmidt's quirks and issues apart of New Girl's final season, while also not allowing the character to a bumbling buffoon of a father. Schmidt will be a stay at home father when Season 7 premiers, finally being free from the office (and co-workers) that taunted him for the majority of his tenure on the show. Cece is the breadwinner of the family, allowing her to be the strong independent woman we've seen grow during the first six seasons.
New Girl will premiere its final eight episode season sometime in the winter or spring-- we'll be sure to update you as more details become public.
