Could Daredevil’s Original Showrunner Return To Marvel? Here’s What He Said
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an ever expanding place. In addition to the blockbusters that arrive every few months, there is also a ton of great content being produced for the small screen-- the best of which are produced over at Netflix. The streaming service's MCU shows all started with Daredevil, which debuted in 2015. Steven DeKnight was the showrunner during its triumphant first season, before eventually departing the series before the sophomore go. Season 2 was still a winner, but wasn't quite as beloved as DeKnight's tenure running the show. But would he ever return for more Marvel projects? One fan asked him this via social media, and his response seemed fairly cut and dry.
Do you hear that? It's the sound of countless Marvel fans cheering for joy. It looks like the OG Daredevil boss would be willing to play within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, should the right project and his schedule allow.
Steven DeKnight's comment is sure to be exciting for fans of the MCU's small screen adventures. The first season of Daredevil is what many consider to be the strongest TV adventure of the shared universe, and the best Marvel/Netflix partnership until possibly Jon Bernthal's The Punisher. Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez took over with a second season that introduced new characters and showed a more capable title character, but watching Matt Murdock's origin story and ascension into power was second to none.
It should be interesting to see how Marvel's Netflix shows change with the upcoming new seasons of the four heroes' shows. With The Defenders now in the rear view, the characters have all crossed over, potentially opening up the heroes to more possibilities and team-ups in the future. While Jessica Jones seems to be wholly focused on everyone's favorite alcoholic private investigator, the second season of Luke Cage will feature at least one appearance by Danny Rand.
Of course, Stephen DeKnight's schedule is a bit busy, which may make it difficult for him to return to the MCU in a large capacity. He directed the upcoming blockbuster Pacific Rim Uprising, working alongside the visionary Guillermo del Toro. He's also involved in the writer's room for the Transformers universe, so DeKnight has quite a few projects on his plate. But with with spinoffs like The Punisher possible, perhaps one specific character will inspire the producer/director to return to the Marvel side of things.
The first two season of Daredevil are currently streaming on Netflix, and you can catch Stephen DeKnight's big screen directing debut when Pacific Rim Uprising arrives March 23rd, 2018.
