It's no secret that we're in the midst of a television renaissance. With new and exciting shows being developed across networks and streaming services, there's a wealth of great content to be binged at any moment. On the network side of things, there are few new shows as popular (and tear-jerking) as NBC's This Is Us. The multi-generational family drama consistently breaks audience's hearts, and Season 2 has been no exception. In particular, the three part fall finale showed each of the twins going through their own struggle. For Kate, this came in the form of a miscarriage, which rocked she and Toby to the core. So what's next for Toby and Kate? Apparently, wedding bells. Showrunner Elizabeth Berger recently revealed this upcoming plot line, saying:
I think these two realize now how much they want to start a family. Whether they will do it immediately, you'll have to wait and see, but they are definitely very excited to plan their wedding. I think these are two people that after everything they have been through feel ready to get married. Yes. I think we can safely say that. We're driving towards a wedding for Kate and Toby by the end of our season.
Well, it looks like Season 2 won't be all heartbreak for Kate Pearson when she returns to the small screen. And considering how heart wrenching her last appearance on the series was, this will be a welcomed change for the fans.
Elizabeth Berger's comments to Glamour seem to let slip a major storyline for the back half of This Is Us Season 2. While Kate and Toby were originally intending to co-parent as partners without having to get married, it seems they'll change their minds about the institution in the coming episodes. Perhaps their newfound determination to have a kid will inspire them to first focus on their own relationship first.
It should be interesting to see how The Pearsons handle the wedding of one of their own. Kate and Toby are one of the show's best love stories, save only for Kate's parents in the past timeline. And while the young couple will no doubt pledge to keep their wedding stress free, the family's interpersonal issues will likely come bubbling to the surface. One could anticipate a conflict between Kate and her mother, as Rebecca attempts to make the day perfect. And with Kevin in serious hot water with Randall and his family, perhaps a happy occasion like a wedding is exactly what the Pearsons need.
Alas, we'll just have to wait to see how it all pans out when This Is Us finally returns from hiatus to break out hearts. The series will return this week on January 9, 2018.
