Ugly Betty, which is based on a Colombian telenovela called Yo Soy Betty, La Fea (Translation: I am Betty, the ugly one), is a dramedy that tells the story of Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), a girl from Queens who lands a job as an assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of MODE magazine, Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius). While Betty is a smart girl, she did not land her job at MODE because of her brains. Instead, Betty landed the job because of her looks - or lack thereof (Betty has glasses, braces, a unibrow, and is not a size 2). Daniel’s father, Bradford, the head of Meade Publications, hired Betty to be his son’s assistant because he wouldn’t want to sleep with her and would therefore get some work done and be well on his way to becoming head of the family business.

While Daniel initially tried to do everything in his power to get rid of her, Betty became invaluable to Daniel. Last season saw many twists and turns: Betty had an almost-romance with Henry, the adorable nerdy guy that works in the accounting department. Daniel became addicted to pills (that he started taking to cure his sex addiction) The brother that Daniel thought was dead returned - as a woman. Wilhelmina Slater, the woman who wants to be in charge at MODE, managed to become engaged to Bradford, who is in the middle of divorcing his wife. She's currently in jail for murdering her husband’s mistress (the former Editor-in-Chief of MODE). Betty’s father, who had been living illegally in the United States for several decades, was sent back to Mexico. Betty’s sister Hilda, who just became engaged to her son’s father, was given the news that he was shot. Daniel and his sister, Alexis, were in a car accident that Alexis set up for their father. All of this happened in just 23 episodes! It certainly sets up a lot for season 2!
Will Daniel and Alexis survive the accident? Will Hilda’s fiancé survive? Will things work out with Betty and Henry? Will Wilhelmina become the next Mrs. Meade? Will Betty’s dad return to the States? We have all of this to look forward too, plus a few cool guest spots, including Posh Spice, herself!
I just ADORE Ugly Betty! It’s such a fun, whimsical show! Betty is one of the most lovable characters on television right now. Although, I have to disagree with the show’s title. Betty is adorable and in no way ugly! This show is just so much fun to watch and there is nothing that I can say about it that will truly do it justice. If you haven’t seen it, watch an episode. After seeing the adorable-ness that is Betty, the antics between Amanda and her gay BFF, Marc, seeing how hysterical and over-the-top Wilhelmina is, and you’ll definitely be hooked! And if that isn’t enough, watch it for Betty’s nephew, the too-cute-for-words Justin. His rendition of “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray is classic!
