MTV is set to kick off their new series MTV’s Top Pop Group with a casting special set to air Thursday, 8/28. In the special we’ll get to see the auditions that took place in Atlanta, Chicago, new York, Miami and Los Angeles. The series will officially premiere on Thursday, September 11th as nine pop groups compete against one another in the hopes of winning a $100,000 prize and the title of “MTV’s Top Pop Group.”

Each week the groups will be trained by a different celebrity coach. A panel of judges and viewers at home will get to decide which groups make it to the next round. Mario Lopez (Saved By the Bell, America’s Best Dance Crew
MTV’s not really thinking outside the box with this one. Another talent competition. Granted, MTV is supposedly all about music and this show is definitely music themed but all the same, how many kinds of shows like this is the network going to churn out? I have no doubt that there will be millions of teens and young adults tuning in, but I’m still enjoying the Idol hiatus so I’ll most likely be passing on this show.
