With the 20th season of The Real World set to premiere sometime this year, MTV is celebrating nearly two decades worth of young-adult “reality” drama with an awards show with some fairly unconventional categories. Then again, given the history of the show, those of us who’ve watched enough of the series can probably understand how they’d be able to find enough nominees for the “Best Phone Call Gone Bad” or “Best Meltdown” category.

Among the other categories are Hottest Male, Hottest Female, Favorite Season, Best Fight, Steamiest Scene, Best Brush with the Law, Favorite Love Story, Roommate You Love To Hate, Gone Baby Gone, Best Dance Off and Biggest Playa (it took me a minute to realize that “playa” in this context doesn’t mean “beach.” I’m getting old). Cast members from all of the seasons will be there to relive their days and accept awards.
I outgrew The Real World about ten seasons ago but I’m actually thinking this awards ceremony might be fun to watch. Even if I don’t recognize half of the houses in attendance, I’m sure there will be plenty of video footage and cast appearances from the seasons I do remember. Nineteen seasons of fights, hook-ups, laughter, tears and more wild scenes involving drunk people than I’m sure many of these houseguests care to (or can) remember. All for the sake of “getting real.”
