Ever wonder what would become of the world if people were to just disappear. How long would the buildings last before everything started to become overgrown with foliage and inhabited by animals? This is something that The History Channel is contemplating with their new special, Life After People.

Using the abandoned city of Chernobyl as a case study, the special will show what can happen to a city when all of the people are gone. With the help of experts in the fields of engineering, botany, ecology, biology, geology, climatology, and archeology, visual effects are used to show the potential outcome of some popular cities if human life were to cease to exist there.

Prior to seeing I Am Legend, I’m not sure that it would’ve ever occurred to me to think about what New York (or any city for that matter) would look like if all of the people suddenly left. But after seeing Will Smith hunting deer in the middle of an overgrown Time Square, I have to say; the whole concept is pretty intriguing.

While the thought of abandoned cities is an interesting thing to contemplate, I couldn’t help but get and eerie feeling while watching the preview video on the History Channel’s website. These feelings of foreboding were only heightened when I saw that the History Channel also included a survivors guide on their site as well. Though I was interested to learn that cats stand a much better chance at surviving on their own than small dogs do.
