Another Grey's Anatomy Alum Is Returning This Season
Season 14 of Grey's Anatomy has been an interesting one. ABC's long running medical drama seems to be going back to basics this season, and telling interpersonal stories that have long been in the works. From introducing Jo's abusive husband Paul to bringing back Kim Raver's Teddy Altman, it seems like showrunner Krista Vernoff is trying to keep the stories contained. News just broke that Teddy will be back for another set of episodes in the back half of Season 14, and she won't be the only character to return after years. Because April's ex-fiancee Matthew will also be coming back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. And Vernoff has revealed how it'll affect April.
Uh oh. Despite finally being in a good place in her separation from Jackson, it looks like April will once again be dealing with the fallout from her former love. After all, she very nearly married Matthew, before leaving him at the aisle to run away with her friend and co-worker.
News of the return of Matthew (Justin Bruening) comes to us from EW, and is sure to excite the diehard Grey's Anatomy fans out there. Because the show has been on the air for so long, we've seen tons of characters promptly written off, never to be heard from again. This was the case with Matthew, who was a sweet and loving partner to April during their two season relationship. Finally bringing him back will be an exciting reward for the fans who haven't stopped watching since the character was last scene in Season 10.
Matthew was a paramedic who worked in Seattle. As such, he often would bring patients into Grey Sloan Memorial's ER, and therefore run into trauma expert April Kepner. Their similar morals and mutual respect made for an adorable love story, especially Matthew's flashmob proposal in the hospital. But through it all, April and Jackson's feelings lay just below the surface. Avery was dating Stephanie Edwards at the time, and both Stephanie and Matthew were ultimately humiliated when Jackson stopped April's wedding and the two ran out of the chapel together.
It should be interesting to see how April reflects upon her decision to ultimately leave Matthew. On one hand, she may have still been happily married to the paramedic, rather than divorced. Then again, her relationship with Jackson ultimately brought them their daughter, Harriet. So all in all, she'll probably be happy with her decision. We'll just have to see.
