Another Daily Show Correspondent Is Moving To Netflix
Netflix is sniping even more talent from The Daily Show as another correspondent has agreed to join its platform. Just weeks after the streaming giant snagged Michelle Wolf for her own Netflix series, Netflix has inked a deal with Hasan Minhaj to bring him over for a project that's sure to have fans of his work excited. Minhaj will be doing a weekly talk show on the platform, and it appears Netflix is betting big on his upcoming show being a success.
Netflix described the new series as a weekly comedy show that features an opportunity for Hasan Minhaj to explore modern politics and culture with a great level of depth and sincerity. As previously mentioned, Netflix seems to be confident this new series will resonate with subscribers, and has already committed to a 32-episode run of the series to start things out. Minhaj, whose upcoming show sounds similar to his work on The Daily Show, was already letting the jokes fly in his statement regarding Netflix acquiring the series:
THR reports that Hasan Minhaj is believed to have produced the pilot for his presently untitled series, which resulted in a bidding war between a few outlets. Comedy Central was one of the networks trying to snag the series, but was ultimately outbid by Netflix. The streaming service presently has his stand-up special, Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King, in its lineup. Netflix's acquisition of Minhaj's series was widely heralded by the platform's VP of Content Bela Bajaria who credited the comic's "thoughtful voice and unique perspective," as one of the reasons the streaming service was so eager to have him.
Hasan Minhaj's pact with Netflix means the end of an era for his run at The Daily Show and Comedy Central. Minhaj joined the series back in November of 2014, and will transition off of the show sometime this summer. While Minhaj will be gone from The Daily Show, the comedian still has one more gig with Comedy Central that includes his four-man comedy ensemble Goatface. The special is set to air in 2019 and, provided Netflix is a big fan of his new series that is expected to make its debut at some point later this year, that will likely be one of the last times he appears on the network for awhile.
While there's been no information on when to expect Hasan Minhaj's new Netflix series, his stand-up special Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King is currently available to stream.
