Eric McCormack's Travelers Renewed For Season 3 At Netflix

Few shows are ever guaranteed to have a future on the small screen unless they're mega-hits like The Big Bang Theory, This Is Us, and Stranger Things. Now, Netflix has some good news for fans of sci-fi drama Travelers. There's no need to worry about whether or not the Season 2 finale was actually the series finale, as Travelers has officially been renewed for Season 3. Eric McCormack will be traveling through time yet again.

The renewal comes nearly three months after Season 2 premiered on Netflix at the end of December 2017. No episode count for Season 3 has been announced at this point. Travelers ran for 12 episodes in Season 1 and Season 2, so the odds are good that Season 3 will run for a dozen episodes as well. That said, we may want to expect some differences between the first two seasons and the third.

The first two seasons of Travelers were produced in a partnership with Canadian speciality channel Showcase. Unlike Netflix which releases most seasons of shows all at once, episodes of Travelers aired weekly on Showcase. According to Variety, Netflix has taken over the distribution plan for Season 3 with no further involvement from Showcase. It's entirely possible that Season 3 won't feel all that different from the two seasons produced with both Netflix and Showcase, but we'll have to wait and see.

Although no premiere date was announced with the renewal news, we may want to expect Season 3 to release in the same window as the first two seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 first aired on Showcase in mid-October and then concluded around the end of the year; Season 3 may follow the same model and premiere in that timeframe. Season 3 is set to begin shooting this month in Vancouver. Taking filming schedules and post-production work into account, a late fall/early winter release of the next batch of episodes would make sense.

Travelers' renewal likely means that Eric McCormack will be quite busy for the foreseeable future. The revival of Will and Grace was renewed for a second season before the first even premiered, and there's no Will and Grace without McCormack as Will. Interestingly, McCormack will be even more heavily involved in Travelers Season 3 than just as the star and a producer. He's also slated to direct the Season 3 premiere. McCormack broke the renewal news first via Twitter:

Travelers stars Eric McCormack as a special operative -- or "traveler" -- from a post-apocalyptic future who has his consciousness sent back in time and transferred into the body of a present-day person who otherwise would have died. Travelers must work to prevent the collapse of society and the post-apocalypse future from coming to pass. The travelers' stories will continue for at least one more season.
