Netflix's One Day At A Time, Queer Eye And More Renewed For New Seasons
Netflix hasn't been very active on the renewal and cancellation front in the most recent weeks, choosing instead to go heavy on promoting current and upcoming releases, as well as announcing exciting new projects. The streaming giant made up for any lost time today by announcing renewals for six different original series, and we're definitely getting One Day at a Time Season 3, Queer Eye Season 2, and much more. Let's break them all down one (day) at a time.
Starring the effortlessly watchable Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, among others, Netflix's One Day at a Time reboot brought a Latino focus to the classic sitcom, and audiences haven't stopped raining praises down upon it. Season 2 only debuted at the end of January, but it contained the show's most heartbreaking episode yet, and fans immediately started wondering why Netflix hadn't ordered up Season 3. Nearly two months later, the streaming service soothed many worries by confirming Season 3 will get 13 episodes that are set to premiere in 2019. Let's make sure Lydia stays healthy for the entire duration, shall we?
A retooled and recast version of Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Netflix's Queer Eye retained the original's approach to giving everyday dudes a lifestyle makeover, from their fashion sense to grooming techniques to food choices to decorating. The update introduced a new quintet made up of Bobby Berk (design), Karamo Brown (culture), Tan France (fashion), Antoni Porowski (food and wine) and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming). The Season 2 renewal means the viewership numbers are apparently giving Netflix some happy vibes, which would be on top of the public's almost entirely positive response. Critics and audiences have delighted in watching the always fun, funny and fittingly fabulous episodes, and we cannot wait to see where the Fab Five goes next in Season 2. (Check out which Netflix characters the Fab Five would love to give makeovers to.)
Inspired by the Internet's love of showcasing everyday failures, Nailed It! is a food competition series like no other, as it focuses on culinary amateurs attempting to recreate artistic and visually appealing baked goods, usually with hilariously shameful results. And it's understandable why Netflix subscribers would be eating up Nailed It!'s six episodes, since host Nicole Byer is saucier than the dishes and is an oddly perfect balance to chocolatier and judge Jacques Torres and his revolving door of chefs as guest judges. We're hoping Season 2 brings more episodes and more impossible-to-replicate desserts for bake-testants to destroy.
Due to the massive ongoing success of its internationally acclaimed crime drama Narcos, Netflix decided to focus on a more true-to-life look at some of the world's most infamous drug lords, as well as the authorities who tirelessly tried bringing them to justice. The first season contained four episodes, which centered on Pablo Escobar (naturally), the Cali Cartel, Frank Lucas and the crime legacy of Kath Pettingill. Season 2's episode count hasn't been confirmed just yet, but there are definitely plenty of crime lords out there who would fit the bill for consideration.
Also focusing on the global impact of drug-related crimes, Netflix's Dope is less about the criminals at the top of the food chain, and more about the different areas affected by addiction, trafficking and more. The four Season 1 installments respectively centered on Oakland, Baltimore, Chicago and areas around the Mexican border. It's a truly sobering look at the endlessly messy and inconquerable War on Drugs, and fans won't have to wait long at all to see what Season 2 has to offer. Netflix announced Season 2 will debut on the service on Friday, April 20. (Timely.)
And finally, to get away from all the darkness of drugs and high-stakes crime, let's end with the Season 2 renewal for the collector-friendly series The Toys That Made Us. The series aims to tell the origins and success stories behind the world's biggest toy franchises. Season 1 came out the gate strong, with its four episodes tackling the Star Wars toy empire, G.I. Joe, Barbie and He-Man. There are obviously many more toy lines to be covered in Season 2 and beyond, such as Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more. Here's hoping we go just as hard on the nostalgia when it returns.
