Ever since it was announced that the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery would take place only 10 years before the show that started it all, fans have been looking for evidence that the shows take place in the same universe. Well, it sounds like one aspect of Star Trek: The Original Series might actually show up in Season 2 of Discovery, which should get fans pretty pumped. It's possible that we could see those classic TOS uniforms on the small screen again when Discovery comes back for its second season. Here's what showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts recently had to say about those primary colored wonders:
Berg: I mean, we are in the same timeline. This is the prime universe and we're pretty close to when The Original Series happens.Harberts: Well, we bump up against the Enterprise at the end of our finale, and we know what kind of uniforms they wear. So, we will leave it at that.
Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts were asked about the possibility of those iconic TOS Starfleet uniforms showing up during the next season of Discovery during a panel at WonderCon 2018 (via ComicBook.com), and while they were a bit cagey in their response, it does sound like there's a good chance that we can see the old school Starfleet uniforms make an appearance on the show in Season 2. As Harberts noted, the crew of the Discovery did, indeed, run into the Enterprise at the very end of the Season 1 finale, when everyone's favorite Original Series starship sent a distress call that was intercepted by the Discovery. Obviously, it would follow that Season 2 would see at least some members of the two crews meet, and unless everyone aboard the Enterprise is naked, we should be seeing those happy, shiny OG uniforms.
The uniforms on Star Trek: Discovery are quite unlike those featured in the other Trek shows over the decades, and the dark blue uniforms with gold detailing are especially a stark contrast from the bright tops and black pants shown in TOS. If you're wondering how Starfleet got from one uniform design to the other in a relatively short span of 10 years, the first novelization for the new show, Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours, revealed that the uniforms seen on the original Star Trek were new, and issued only to crew members on Starfleet's Constitution class starships.
We have a while to wait yet to see if Star Trek: Discovery will show off some original Star Trek uniforms when the show returns.
