Watch SNL Turn The Handmaid's Tale Into A Sex In The City Spinoff
The Handmaid's Tale is one of the best shows one can watch on streaming, but it can be a downer. But what would happen if, instead of focusing on the oppression of women, the series instead focused on four sassy women making the best of it and telling their tales all throughout Gilead? Saturday Night Live and Amy Schumer teamed up to give those curious for an answer as they combined the Hulu drama with the HBO classic Sex In The City for a ridiculous spinoff:
"Rent controlled" really takes on a new meaning in this humorous Saturday Night Live skit. Amy Schumer and the cast really managed to capture the tone of Sex In The City and somehow mix it wonderfully with The Handmaid's Tale. No doubt some fans will be quoting this skit come Wednesday when June or one of the other handmaid's utters "under his eye," to someone for one reason or another. Of course, the actual series is pretty depressing and very devoid of humor, so it might be hard to keep smiling as the series finds more and more ways to torture its main cast.
All of the Saturday Night Live women are funny in the "Handmaid's In The City" sketch, but Kate McKinnon really deserves some credit on this one. The joke about her eye definitely brought the house down, although there were some other moments that were close second. Amy Schumer's reaction to how good she looked in red while being tasered may not have been very Sex In The City, but that goofy grin in the midst of all her pain was the perfect way to cap off such a darkly comedic sketch.
Given the dark nature of The Handmaid's Tale, it wouldn't be all that surprising to see Saturday Night Live ruffle a few feathers for making light of the series. Having said that, internet comments reacting to the skit so far are largely positive, with only a few taking issue with the sketch comedy show parodying the series with Sex In The City. We'll have to wait and see.
This is the second time Saturday Night Live has released a noteworthy sketch mocking the award-winning drama, as Chris Pine was on hand to help have a little fun at the show's expense last year. When compared to the Sex In The City skit, the first attempt is far less memorable, although it still finds some humor amidst all the darkness of the show:
Saturday Night Live airs on NBC Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET. As for The Handmaid's Tale, audiences can catch new episodes of the Hulu drama on Wednesdays.
