Tina Fey Pitched A 30 Rock And Parks And Rec Spinoff, And We're So Down
Tina Fey has been asked about the potential of a 30 Rock revival before, and while attending the 2018 Tony Awards on June 10, she was asked about it again. This time, Fey suggested an inventive solution that would answer not just one, but two fan bases' hopes and dreams. Suggesting a seismic crossover spinoff, Tina Fey said:
Yes, she totally said that! Can you imagine a spinoff of Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock? One of the many great things such a show would entail is the reunion of the comedy dream team that is Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. If Fey was serious when she pitched the idea to ET, it would be the answer to the reboot dilemma she mentioned to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.
If you recall, when she answered the 30 Rock reboot question on the late night talk show, Tina Fey said she and Robert Carlock would not do a traditional reboot of the beloved NBC comedy, or as she put it, a "straight up" one. That seems to indicate Fey is not on board with the idea of a sequel season that would pick up sometime after the 30 Rock finale. That is how many revivals in recent years have been done.
Regardless, it sounds like she may have found a way to switch things up. Albeit, it has nothing to do with the story ideas she posited before. One key 30 Rock cast member has been optimistic regarding a revival, as has the ensemble of Parks and Recreation. 30 Rock went off the air in 2013, while Parks and Recreation ended in 2015. The key word in Amy Poehler's comments about a future for Parks and Rec was the use of "someday." That does not necessarily put it on a timetable that screams "coming soon," but it is a positive notion.
As we have seen with other revivals, the key is the original cast being game to do it and both casts seem willing. Obviously, a 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation spinoff would likely be well-received by fans. You would get to see Liz Lemon and Leslie Knope on the same show. What's not to love about that?
Of course, some fans are going to want to focus solely on 30 Rock's characters and vice-versa, but it is better than nothing. And it would involve Tina Fey and Amy Poehler sharing the screen again. Could this two-for-one reunion be the solution to fans' dreams? Assuming this could actually be in the cards, maybe. Only time will tell.
