Catfish was a truly eye-opening film about a case involving someone posing as someone else online, only to be exposed by the person they were deceiving. Audiences loved the film so much MTV developed the concept into a series, and ever since Nev Schulman and Max Joseph have been traveling the nation and exposing people who have been posing as others on the internet. Now, it appears to be the end of an era, as Joseph announced on social media he's leaving the series to pursue other projects:
Max Joseph may be out of the series, but as he mentioned in his Instagram post, Catfish isn't going anywhere. The show, which had some drama earlier in the year with allegations of sexual misconduct that were later cleared by MTV, is still planning on going strong after Joseph's exit. The co-host teased his final episode will air on Wednesday, August 22, and that he's excited for what's next in his career beyond Catfish.
Max Joseph's exit was met with well wishes from his co-host Nev Schulman, who released a fairly lengthy statement about the exit via social media. Schulman called Joseph his "brother," and claimed he was his "best friend," as well as "one of the best colleagues anyone could hope for." Schulman particularly pointed to Joseph's ability to listen and empathize with others, as well as his ability to cut through the nonsense and deliver hard truth when needed. Catfish fans know those are skills that are often necessary on the series, as it can often take a fair amount of digging from each host to get to the bottom of what's really going on in these various situations.
The next move for Max Joseph post-Catfish is uncertain, although the assumption is that Joseph will be pursuing other projects related to filmmaking. Joseph wrote the screenplay and directed the film We Are Your Friends in 2015, so it stands to reason he might have another film project in the pipeline he's looking to bring to theaters. Something like that would keep him too busy to commit to the rampant travel and filming schedule of Catfish, although as Nev Schulman suggested, he could eventually find the time to pop on for a video chat segment on the show every now and again.
Catfish is currently in the midst of Season 7, at will air Max Joseph's final episodes Wednesday, August 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
