The Handmaid's Tale Season 3 Is Bringing Back One Of Its Most Intriguing Characters
The Handmaid's Tale set the stage for a wild Season 3, and we can only guess what will happen to Offred after the crazy decision she made at the end of Season 2. One thing that seems certain is that she'll need all the help she can get, given all the chaos that will ensue once news of her escape gets out. Luckily, we can assume she'll have one resourceful ally on the inside, as Season 3 will bring back Bradley Whitford to portray one of its more intriguing characters Commander Lawrence.
Commander Lawrence only had a limited role in Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale, but its fair to say his character was one of the more interesting newcomers of the latest season. Lawrence's disgust with what Gilead has become (combined with Ofglen's actions) prompted him to give his Handmaid a chance to escape. The move, which was coordinated with a network of people to allow Offred a chance, revealed it wasn't the first time doing this. Deadline reporting Whitford will be back as a series regular in Season 3, which could allow for the show to explore this plot line further.
One would imagine that if Commander Lawrence has been wrapped up in the resistance prior to this, he'll have to lay low given Emily's attack on Aunt Lydia in his house. Executive producer Warren Littlefield revealed enough to assume there will be questions or repercussions for what happened, and with higher-ups sniffing around at the commander's household, they may catch wise that he hasn't operated like the typical Gilead commander for a while now. With Emily gone, its possible he could craft a scenario that leaves him free from blame in regards to Lydia's injuries, but that would seem to depend on how much Lydia remembers from the attack.
Its possible Bradley Whitford's character will also have more interaction with June, who opted out of leaving Gilead in order to rescue her daughter before making a grand escape. June now knows Commander Lawrence is well-connected enough to be a big ally to her cause, so it wouldn't be surprising if she ends up at his doorstep at some point with a request or two. As mentioned, Lawrence might have some eyes on him when The Handmaid's Tale returns, so he might not be as willing to help June if she asks for his help.
The Handmaid's Tale is coming back to Hulu for Season 3, but we have no idea when it will arrive. That's fine for the moment, as the coming months are jam-packed with new television, all of which can be found at our fall premiere guide.
