Sony's Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has surpassed the expectations of many and has made the company's plans to capitalize on the Spider-Man franchise and its side characters feel like a successful strategy. Sony appears confident about exploring more of the unique Spider-Verse, as Sony Chief Kenichiro Yoshida announced exciting projects potentially moving forward at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Yoshida revealed Sony is considering animated television shows based on the characters of the film, which would keep the fun rolling.
If Sony follows through with that venture, there's a chance the world will get to see Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Spider-Ham, and others before a sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is complete. While the possibility of Sony pursuing television series is still up in the air, the odds favor something being green-lit given the movie's financial success and rave reviews. Venom 2 got the go-ahead with only one, so an animated series happening doesn't feel like a stretch.
It wouldn't be out of character for Sony to commission an animated Spider-Man series or two either. The New York Times reported the company has been aggressive with its development of projects for Spider-Man characters, although those moves have been happening more on the film side. The last animated Spider-Man project to come out of Sony Pictures Television was 2008's The Spectacular Spider-Man. Sony was also responsible for the short-lived MTV series, Spider-Man: The New Animated Series.
The latter of those two projects managed to wrangle some all-star talent and featured Michael Clarke Duncan reprising his role as Kingpin from the film Daredevil. It would be a gas if this possible Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse series could do the same, and bring the movie's voice cast in for television shenanigans. If not everyone, we'd settle for Nicolas Cage and John Mulaney just going back and forth as Spider-Noir and Spider-Ham for 30 minutes each week.
Jokes aside, a chance to focus on characters who wouldn't get a ton of story development or screen time in the sequel is a big reason a Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse show or two could be a blast. It'd also be nice just to see a show that centers on Miles Morales, who hasn't gotten a lot of shine in the world of animated television until recently. That said, Miles has appeared in the latest animated Spidey adventure, simply titled Spider-Man.
