One Day At A Time Trailer Brings Brooklyn Nine-Nine Guest Stars To Season 3
A little bit of Brooklyn is coming to One Day at a Time! The third season of Netflix's family comedy is on the way in the not-too-distant future, and two stars of NBC's (formerly Fox's) Brooklyn Nine-Nine will appear. Fans can get a first look at Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz's characters interacting with the extended Alvarez family in a new Season 3 trailer. Check it out!
The new One Day at a Time trailer gives only a glimpse at how Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz will contribute to the upcoming third season, but I think it's safe to say that their ODAAT characters will be quite different from their Brooklyn Nine-Nine characters, and not just because Fumero's ODAAT character looks considerably more glammed up than Amy Santiago goes for at the NYPD.
Penelope may not be too thrilled to see Melissa Fumero's character, at least. Fumero will play Estrellita, who was once actually quite close to her cousin Penelope. Unfortunately, a rift between their mothers resulted in the cousins spending much less time together. They're at least on speaking terms in this episode; could that change once their moms are together again? The formidable Gloria Estefan has been cast to play Estrellita's mom.
As for Stephanie Beatriz, she'll be playing another cousin of Penelope's. The character is named Pilar, and Elena will become convinced that Pilar is gay. Given how much praise One Day at a Time has received for how it handled Elena's coming out storyline, fans can probably count on a storyline that is as hilarious as it is heartwarming between Elena and Pilar.
As different as Pilar looks to be from Stephanie Beatriz's Rosa on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Beatriz did tackle a story about her character's sexuality when Rosa revealed to her friends (and eventually, her parents) that she's bisexual. Beatriz has proven that she can tackle a story about sexual preference on a comedy in the past; whether Pilar is gay or not, we can be confident that Beatriz will deliver an engaging performance.
The next month should be full of treats for fans of the actresses. One Day at a Time will debut its third season in February, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is back on the airwaves as of January 10 despite a spring cancellation by its original network. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was only officially cancelled for a day before NBC announced that it was picking up the series, and Season 6 was slated for a midseason premiere.
The show will work a bit differently on NBC, and NBC hasn't held back in promoting its debut. Throw in the fact that the almost the entire original cast made the move to the Peacock Network full-time, and there should be plenty of what fans came to know and love. Assuming One Day at a Time continues into a fourth season, I have to hope that Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz would have time in their busy Brooklyn Nine-Nine schedules to reprise their roles as Penelope's cousins!
