This Is Us is already making plans for its endgame. The beloved NBC drama is planning for “about three” more seasons before it draws to an “elegant” end, according to This Is Us' co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker. Discussing the show’s eventual finale, Aptaker revealed:
I would hope that it’s elegant. That’s what we’re going for. I would hope that when we reach our ending, people think it’s a really satisfying end place, that makes sense, and it feels like they’ve watched something that is a complete piece of work because that’s really how we’re trying to plan it. Almost like you would a book, or a super-long movie. We’ve had this end in mind for a long time, so we’re able to plan for it, and try to make it feel like it’s a whole, as opposed to a series that’s going to go endlessly.
This Is Us fans usually have their tissues handy to wipe a tear or more regarding the latest plot twists. This news may induce tears for different reasons. Considering what Isaac Atpaker told Deadline, the show’s creative powers already have a specific end in sight. That fits with what series creator Dan Fogelman previously said when he noted they had already filmed pieces of the final scene for the series finale.
This may be sad news for fans who would like to see the show go on indefinitely. However, the update from Isaac Aptaker is arguably as assuring as it is bittersweet. Fans can take solace in knowing that the show is not making things up as they go along. This Is Us has had its ending in mind for what sounds like a while.
