This weekend, the biggest movie of Brie Larson's career will hit theaters, with Captain Marvel introducing audiences to the newest MCU superheroine. (The first to get her own standalone feature, no less.) Larson already has two other movies wrapped up – with one of them being Avengers: Endgame – and she has now landed her next role. Surprisingly, it'll be one part of Apple's upcoming original TV series slate.
The project, which received a straight-to-series order from Apple, will be a female-focused CIA drama, with Brie Larson taking the lead. Serving as the direct inspiration for the series will be CIA undercover operative Amaryrillis Fox's upcoming memoir Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA.
Drawing upon Amaryllis Fox's real-world experiences and stories, the new series will follow a young woman's trials and tribulations as part of the CIA. According to Deadline, it's described as being "provocative," and the story of Brie Larson's lead character will be shaded by her various relationships with those closest to her. As such, it sounds like we can probably expect to see just as much emotional and interpersonal drama as conspiratorial CIA missions.
The project is still in the very early stages. Currently, negotiations are being finalized for Megan Martin to serve as writer and executive producer. Martin previously executive produced and wrote for the TNT drama Animal Kingdom, and also wrote episodes of The Following and Cult. Notably for horror fans, Martin penned the screenplay for Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. The 2010 TV movie she wrote, Tangled, starred Sarah Wayne Callies as a spy trying to reassert her identity, so maybe there will be some parallels with this new show.
Brie Larson will also serve as an executive producer for the upcoming spy drama, giving her more creative power over the project. Giving the story even more legitimacy than a book can provide, Amaryllis Fox will be on board as a producer, and she will also be offering up further background material as needed.
51 Entertainment and Media Res are the studios behind the new series, with A Star Is Born producer Howell Taylor and The Leftovers' Michael Ellenberg joining Larson as executive producers. This very trio was the one who got together and picked up both Amaryllis Fox's life rights and the book rights for Undercover, which will be published on October 15.
Serving as co-producer will be Media Res' Dani Gorin, who already has a high-profile in the pipeline at Apple. Along with other TV projects, Gorin is also overseeing the still-untitled morning show dramedy starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carrell, among others.
For years now, Captain Marvel's Brie Larson has been one of the most dependable actresses out there, and her talents earned her the much-deserved Best Actress Oscar for 2015's Room. But beyond her dramatic and superheroic work on the big screen, she's been just as solid on television throughout her career.
Her first big role was for the comedy Raising Dad with Bob Saget and Kat Dennings, and almost a decade later, she played Toni Collette's daughter on Showtime's The United States of Tara. After that, she really started nailing it with the comedy appearances on The League, NTSF:SD:SUV, and Kroll Show. This new show will be her first TV role since Larson took on the final of her three appearances on Community.
