An unexpected Netflix show is setting binge-watching records. The news comes not too long after the streaming platform reported the record-breaker that was Stranger Things Season 3. Now, the infamously secretive Netflix is sharing more viewership insight, revealing the record-setting results of the Spanish-language series La Casa de Papel aka Money Heist.
Netflix has confirmed to Variety that Part 3 of Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) was watched by over 34.3 million household accounts during its first seven days. Part 3 launched globally on July 19. These numbers make it the second place all-time record holder for a global bow on Netflix. That is not where Money Heist’s record-setting results end.
Part 3 also marks Netflix’s best-ever first-week worldwide results for a non-English-language series. In key worldwide territories, Money Heist’s third act also set the overall record for the most-watched Netflix series or film of all-time. A stunning 70% (over 24 million) of Netflix’s household accounts finished Part 3 during the first week of its release.
That is some dedication! Part 3 consists of eight episodes. Last month, Netflix reported that Stranger Things had been watched by 40.6 million household accounts in its first four days. The news is huge for Money Heist (La Casa de Papel), which has already launched production on Part 4, per Variety.
It is a meteoric performance for a series that has caught on quickly all around the world. Another thing worth noting is that you can currently choose one of Money Heist’s characters to be your personal log-in icon on Netflix.
The first part of Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) premiered in December 2017 with the second part not coming too long after in April 2018. Netflix subscribers had to wait longer to watch Part 3. That gave curious viewers ample time to binge-watch the previous season. Over a year went by as the series made its triumphant return on July 19, 2019.
These record-setting numbers indicate how many were anticipating the series’ return. For the uninitiated, Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) is as its title suggests a heist drama. It begins with eight thieves taking hostages as they lock themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain. All while a “criminal mastermind manipulates the police to carry out his plan,” per Netflix.
It sounds like another non-U.S. binge-worthy thriller. Netflix has been getting less shy about sharing its ratings. Money Heist’s are massive! It is excellent news for the streaming giant, which is facing increased competition. The platform has dealt with a significant blow recently.
It has remained steadfast in its confidence. Netflix’s boss has said that he believes users will add more streamers, instead of cancelling its service when new options arrive like Disney+. That makes sense, considering that Netflix is streaming content like Money Heist (La Casa de Papel). It has a definite edge in the global market.
