Mindhunter Star Holt McCallany Is 'Deeply Flattered' By Bill Tench Being A Sex Symbol
Netflix subscribers have binged Mindhunter Season 2 and while some are debating whether or not the show teased another serial killer, others are praising the show's latest sex symbol. No, it's not Holden Ford actor Jonathan Groff, Anna Torv's Wendy, and thankfully none of the actors who portray serial killers. Instead, there's a community of folks going gaga for Holt McCallany's Bill Tench.
For anyone who may be shocked by that, they aren't alone. McCallany admitted that he's surprised by the fact his Mindhunter character has become a sex symbol, to the point he's kind of at a loss for words.
Bill Tench is a character Holt McCallany would describe as a "chainsmoker with a buzzcut," but to some fans of Mindhunter he's so much more. Twitter is littered with declarations of love for Tench, with many pointing towards the classical machismo he radiates and the calm but commanding presence he displays. Tench can be stern or upset, but rarely does he come unglued or lose his cool when it matters. That's more than can be said for Holden!
So, who's the muse for Holt McCallany's portrayal? The character is actually based on FBI agent Robert Ressler who in real life looked like a mix between McCallany and Robert De Niro. McCallany said his character was co-developed with executive producer David Fincher, and is partly inspired by his famous father Michael McAloney. When asked what he thought has drawn so many people to the character, McCallany told The Wrap it's love for a forgotten era.
Holt McCallany's portrayal of Bill Tench has inspired a fandom, and anyone who is feeling some kind of way about the character can now refer to themselves as a "Tench Wench." It sounds like a niche group, but a quick Twitter search of the term will show the number wenches are growing. How many Tench's Wenches will there be by the time Season 3 rolls around? Hopefully a lot more! The character's gonna need the love after how things ended for him in Season 2.
