HGTV’s Flip Or Flop Stars In Hot Water Over 'Misleading' Real Estate Seminars
Over the past few years, Flip or Flop’s Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa managed to maintain steady TV careers, despite a high-profile divorce and even a remarriage on Christina’s part. (For his part, Tarek has also been dating.) Now, it looks like they aren’t out of the tabloids yet. A new FTC filing has the Flip or Flop couple in hot water due to being involved with a “misleading” real estate seminar.
The couple had been involved with a company called Zurixx for a while. Per the filing, Zurixx LLC has gotten people to sign up for $1,997 seminars after putting on “free” seminars meant to help people get into the business of flipping. There’s also a secondary alleged scheme in which class attendees were asked to increase credit limits and sign up for more classes costing thousands of dollars, using the credit cards to pay for said classes. Reportedly, these seminars were also "bogus."
It should be noted the famous former couple was not directly running the real estate seminars in question. What Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa did do is endorse the real estate seminars. They weren’t alone in this practice. Peter Souhleris and Dave Seymour from Flipping Boston, which airs on A&E, were also involved in endorsing the product.
Zurixx’s alleged business practices had been an open secret for a while now. The FTC mentioned in its filing that if people complained about the seminars they would often be refunded their money—but only if they signed documents that would keep them from saying anything negative about the real estate seminars they attended.
Zurixx sent out a statement (via THR) saying the company was fully cooperating with the filing and subsequent investigation, and that the company is looking forward to a “positive outcome” regarding the real estate seminars. Currently, new planned real estate seminars have been put on hold.
HGTV has not responded about the FTC investigation. Meanwhile, both Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead have not spoken out about the event on social and have instead been enjoying time with their family. Christina Anstead and her new partner Ant Anstead recently welcomed a baby boy. Both Anstead and El Moussa shared a photo over the weekend of their son on vacation with his grandparents.
