A Rhythm + Flow Contestant Just Started Beef With Migos' Quavo
Warning! The following contains spoilers for Netflix's Rhythm + Flow. Read at your own risk!
Netflix original Rhythm + Flow has been searching for America's next big Hip Hop recording artist, but this show is no American Idol or The Voice. While those competitions have eased up on judges giving harsh criticism to contestants, this show features some of the biggest names in the industry telling it the way they see it. That attitude has now unintentionally created a feud between one of the show's former contestants and Migos member Quavo.
The former contestant, The Lyrical Gift, is none too happy about the major label rapper disrespecting him on Rhythm + Flow. Following his performance, Quavo gave a particularly scathing criticism that the rest of the judges couldn't help but laugh at.
Man, that was rough. Regardless of whether or not Quavo meant his criticism to come across so harsh, it certainly would've been tough to hear. The real knife twist was when rapper and occasional actor T.I. burst out laughing, which really makes you feel for The Lyrical Gift up on stage. It wasn't a terrible performance by any means, but certainly not the level of quality Rhythm + Flow is looking for.
The Lyrical Gift's short cameo on Rhythm + Flow may have been easily forgotten by viewers, but now he's back with a diss track calling out Quavo for his unkind words. The rapper has released a track called "Time's Up Quavious" on his Soundcloud, which kicks off with a soundbite of the guest judge's insult during his audition. In the song, The Lyrical Gift speaks his truth on what he believes his talent is versus what Quavo said about him.
The song has generated close to 70,000 views on Soundcloud in its first 5 days, and has gotten a lot of comments from people familiar with the drama. Many of the comments criticize Quavo for his thoughts on The Lyrical Gift, which may be tied to the sometimes polarizing sub-genre his rap group Migos is associated with, "mumble rap." As of writing Quavo has yet to respond to the diss track in any negative or positive way, and it's doubtful he will.
Quavo responding to the diss will only give The Lyrical Gift more attention, and bring more people in on the story. Of course, this feud would be great subtle promotion for Hustle + Flow, which still has yet to release its final batch of episodes. Now that The Lyrical Gift has gotten some shine from taking a shot at a Rhythm + Flow judge, will other rejected contestants follow suit?
