Vikings Is Getting A TV Spinoff At Netflix
Vikings is getting a television spinoff, and it is happening on Netflix! This ends any concerns that Vikings’ much-anticipated final season could be the universe’s last. Series creator Michael Hirst already has another epic tale on the horizon set in the vibrant and immersive world of Vikings.
What is it about? Well, the spinoff has a name that those familiar with Viking culture will immediately recognize. The Netflix series is titled Vikings: Valhalla. No, it will not take place in the Vikings’ afterlife. This will tell a new saga that takes place 100 years after Vikings concludes. Time to make more history!
That’s right, no prequel series here. Vikings: Valhalla will dramatize the life and times of the most famous Vikings ever. Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Hardrada (spelled Harada in the description), and Norman King/Viking descendant William the Conqueror. The series will accordingly follow them as their stories unfurl in the changing landscape of Europe.
First of all, I have been dying to see a William the Conqueror series since forever, so this news just made a dream come true! Knowing that his story will be told with Michael Hirst’s involvement is thrilling. As evidenced by Ragnar, the Vikings creator has the ability to tell epic stories revolving around this kind of character.
I am incredibly curious to see how and if William’s relationship with his wife, Matilda/Maud of Flanders, will be portrayed. Their marriage is believed to have produced 10 children who survived to adulthood! A real rarity in those times. There is enough family drama there to fuel quite a bit of story for years and years.
Vikings’ creator is no stranger to exploring rich history. Who will play these towering figures? A cast has not been announced quite yet. It will be fun to see who lands these historical roles. Vikings has shown a profound skill in that department. Hopefully the same will be true with Vikings: Valhalla. That could mean a show even bolder than the History original, which is already quite graphic.
This is another Vikings-esque foray for Netflix, which is already home to the terrific series The Last Kingdom, as well as the soon-to-be home of the upcoming TV adaptation of The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill. They are just some of the series you should stream if you love Vikings. Armed with a spinoff, Netflix is going all-in on the genre!

Will Vikings: Valhalla have its Lagertha in Freydis? The Vikings character is a tough act to follow. Leif Erikson and Harald Hardrada should be other colorful characters as well. As for William the Conqueror, he is mentioned and not his wife. Time will have to tell on that front.
Behind the scenes, The Fugitive’s Jeb Stuart will write and executive produce the series alongside Vikings: Valhalla’s creator Michael Hirst. Joining them as an executive producer will be Vikings’ Morgan O’Sullivan.
Vikings’ return is imminent. While you wait for this new Netflix spinoff, you can speculate on photos for Season 6 and what fate may have in store for Lagertha. The teaser trailer teased a massive war heading fans’ way.
A premiere date for Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla has not been set yet, so stay tuned! The two-hour premiere of Vikings Season 6 is happening this winter. The final season begins Wednesday, December 4, at 9 p.m. ET on History. Vikings: Season 5 Volume 2 Blu-ray/DVD set is out now!
