Marvel's Woes Continue At Hulu, As New Show Loses Showrunner And Writers
We used to be flying high in the time of Marvel superheroes taking over TV. We had Daredevil, Luke Cage and more on Netflix, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC, Cloak & Dagger on Freeform, Runaways on Hulu and other shows sprinkled across our television landscape. Now, though, all of the live-action shows that don't call new streamer Disney+ home have either already seen their last shows air, or will be leaving us soon. Unfortunately, Hulu is, once again, having trouble with one of its Marvel series, but this time it's the animated Tigra & Dazzler Show.
Tigra & Dazzler Show was announced as one of Hulu's four planned, adult-themed animated Marvel shows almost a year ago, and while the others (M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey and Howard the Duck) appear to still be on track, news has just come down that Tigra & Dazzler showrunner Erica Rivinoja and all of the show's writing staff have been let go from the comedy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Erica Rivinoja and the writers who worked under her had finished several scripts and outlines for Tigra & Dazzler Show and were 15 weeks into their 20 week production schedule. Unfortunately, creative differences with Marvel led to the overhaul and production has now been halted so that Marvel can hire a new showrunner, who will then be charged with finding another team of writers to craft the show. Everything that Rivinoja and her writers completed is being tossed out, and the new showrunner will start from scratch.
This isn't the first problem that we've seen with a Marvel show on Hulu. It was just in late September that we heard that the proposed Ghost Rider TV show was no longer happening at the streamer, which was a serious bummer for many of the fans who saw the character reemerge on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D in 2016 and were looking forward to seeing more of Gabriel Luna in the role.
In that case, though, it appears that the team working on the show had creative differences with Hulu, instead of Marvel, and the end result was even worse than what's happening with Tigra & Dazzler, seeing as how Hulu just went ahead and scrapped all of its plans to do Ghost Rider at all. So, at least there still seems to be a real chance that Tigra & Dazzler will see the light of day.
The plan is still for Tigra & Dazzler to be the third show to debut on Hulu from the Marvel animated shows, with M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey coming out first and Howard the Duck following in the fourth spot. Then, a Netflix-style team-up series, The Offenders, is still set to show all the characters getting together, but the individual series aren't interconnected, so the issues with Tigra & Dazzler won't impact any of the other three shows.
Runaways will begin its ending on Hulu when Season 3 starts streaming on December 13, but Helstrom, another live-action Marvel show, is still on track to debut at some point in 2020. So, all is not quite lost just yet if you want some Marvel television without Disney+.
